i didn't see a topic on it so i thought i would post it
today after i was studying for APs, some friends and I were talking, and some people started talking about the end of the world. they said that recently some taiwanese prophet called Teacher Wang predicted a 14.0 earthquake to hit taiwan, causing the ground to split, and a giant tsunami. this prophet apparently started a lot of hysteria amongst the taiwanese people and the man was even arrested
i was wondering what people on TL would think about this :D
i personally think 14.0 is ridiculous, although deep down i wish the earthquake would happen so i wouldnt need to take my APs

edit: apparently the man predicted it to happen at taiwanese time 10 AM (approximately the same as korean time or may be one hour off)

14 would be the highest earthquake recorded, no?
At least the man has ambition. No half-assing this prophecy, it's not vague at all.
I'm amazed that it caused panic, though. Was the guy some big figure or somesuch?

uh does the prophet know what 14 mag earthquake is?
it is 10,000 stronger of an earthquake than mag 10 on the richter scale.
To put it in perspective,...
Mag 12.50 is equivalent to an explosion of 100 teratons of TNT or 420 ZJ
and example of this is Yucatán Peninsula impact (creating Chicxulub crater) 65 Ma ago (108 megatons; over 4x1030 ergs = 400 ZJ).(from wikipedia)
that meteor wiped off life off most of the earth and that was 12.5 ....Is the prophet saying that the earthquake would be like ~75 times stronger than that meteor impact? Everyone on earth would be toast. I don't think the tectonics plates would shift THAT much for and earthquake to hit 14.

I must say, as catastrophic as a mag 14 would be (and crazy compared even to the Yucatan impact), I almost wish that it would happen so I can wake up from a horrible dream, because if it happened I must be living in a dream. You'd have to have like, an entire fucking plate suddenly subduct the other in a fast manner or something.... combined with a tremendous asteroid impact.

LOL live in cargo contains haha, he must be a fraud. It's pretty funny, I'm sure he thinks mag 14 and 560ft tsnuamis sound huge, but a mag 14 quake would almost certainly create a disastrous tsunami wave FAR exceeding 560ft.

during AP english, a lot of us were sitting patiently and waiting for 10:42 (when he said it would happen) we were all so disappointed when it didnt happen
now the man is saying that the event was actually postponed and that it will happen on a later date
