I didn't really keep up with music very well this year, so I'm happy to see all the lists popping up to help me figure out what I've been missing. I'd agree with people who have called it a down year. This is more like a list of ten songs I rated highly in my iTunes rather than the top ten songs of the year.

1. My Girls by Animal Collective

I'm kind of sick of My Girls by now but I'll give it the one spot anyway; I didn't care for the rest of the album.

2. The Reeling by Passion Pit

I also really like Little Secrets from this album (Manners).

+ Show Spoiler +

3. ecstasy by jj

It's based on the Weezy song "Lolipop".

+ Show Spoiler +

4. S'Vive by Bibio

I also really like Fire Ants from this album (Ambivalence Avenue).

+ Show Spoiler +

5. Feel It All Around by Washed Out

I've really been into this type of mellow stuff lately (see songs 4 and 6, as well as nujabes, which I listen to while playing on ICCup).

+ Show Spoiler +

6. Suburban Dogs by Real Estate

The whole album is pretty chill like this, and the cover art reminds me of Invisible Cities, one of my favorite books.

+ Show Spoiler +

7. You're a Target by No Age

Yay noise rock.

+ Show Spoiler +

8. Dream About Me by The Depreciation Guild

This is my favorite band. I bought tickets for their Tucson show but couldn't go. Sucked. I don't really like this song compared to the first album but oh well. Also, the video is the most uncomfortably gay thing ever; I can't watch it.

+ Show Spoiler +

9. Stay Away From Being Maybe by Telefon Tel Aviv

This came out early in the year. Speaks to how bad the year has been that it made this list. I think I have a lot of 2009 songs that I just didn't rate in iTunes for some reason...

+ Show Spoiler +

10. Gee by Girls Generation

OMG they say "GG" and "GG" is something that they say in Korean Starcraft and they are Korean! OMG!!!

+ Show Spoiler +

Really like this list, but you picked that song off the Telefon Tel Aviv album really?? I think M, Birds, and Plant a Tree… are the standouts.

GEE is old. We or rather, I got over that damn lyrical madness.

Whoops...

edit: Ive always wondered why I dont have any interest in my own country's (Taiwan and China) music.

Well, as a shoegaze fan, I am drawn to its textures. You Are the Worst Thing In the World was my other favorite song on the album. I guess I chose the song I did because I remember playing Warhammer Online when that song came on and I couldn't help but dance around to its beat inside of a flaming building for the duration.

Yeah, wikipedia dates it to way back on January 5th. I heard it a few times but didn't download it until about a month ago, maybe less.

As an Animal Collective sycophant, I have to ask how you thought "My Girls" was the only good song on MPP when you have really textural material like "In the Flowers," "Daily Routine," and "No More Runnin," not to mention the Fall Be Kind EP. In the way that it takes samplers and synths and makes them gauzy and romantic and "organic" ("natural"), it's not a far cry from Seefeel.

Also, what did you think of Asobi Seksu's two albums?

I actually came into this blog thinking "Man, there's no way Gee would be on his list."

I was pleasantly surprised.

I dunno why I didn't get into MPP. Maybe it's because I have listened to it mostly in my car and not with headphones. I haven't tried the Fall Be Kind EP yet. I hadn't even heard of Seefeel; I will check them out.

I really loved Asobi Seksu and Citrus. Not so much Hush or Acoustic at Olympic Studios.

With relation to Asobi Seksu, that seems to be the consensus. Total shame: there's an iciness about Hush that makes it a perfect wintertime record. Rewolf/A@OS didn't sound as much like Victorialand as I was hoping it would, but it's unraveled beautifully with repeated listening. I want them to do a whole record of new material in the same vein.

Neither MPP nor Fall Be Kind, with some songs excepting, seem like proper driving music to me, so that could be an issue. I urge you to reconsider, although it warrants mentioning that my critical faculties fail me with AC and I turn into a guy blubbering about everything and anything.

For Seefeel, the Starethrough EP and Quique LP are the best points of entry. If you're a Boards of Canada or Aphex Twin (ambient techno days, not dnb) fan, they're also a good band to check out. Slowdive's Pygmalion is another good example of electronics used to dream-pop/shoegaze ends and perhaps a less tenuous comparison than Seefeel re: Animal Collective.
