I started playing SC2 shortly after it was released.
I played SC1 a lot(for something like 3-4 years) but most of the time I played UMS and made maps(Clan Oo anyone? No? Oh well) so I didn't have much experience outside of units/controls.
After playing some customs with a friend I jumped into ladder and was placed in silver with 3/5 games won.
My record at the end of season 1 was something like 24-19 with a 5 loss spree in there(I took a break came back and ruined my record trying to play terran for a day). As you can tell by the win-loss I don't play much.
Shortly after Season 2 started I buckled down(relative to my previous play). I have a friend who is Platinum and another who is Diamond who both play zerg, so I started doing custom 1v1 against them for about 2 weeks(Getting my ass beat, but seeing stuff they do and having them tell me where I messed up).
I then jumped back on ladder and over the period of 1-2 weeks went something like 22-4.
After I started playing golds/plats and lost like 8/15 games it promoted me to Gold finally. Over the past 3 weeks I have secured #1 in my Gold division and am running with a guesstimated 60-70% win rate(thanks blizzard for making me guess x.x) with my 58 wins for this season. I'm at the edge of platinum, and I can taste it. Won 3 of my 3 games I played today, one of which was against a platinum player, and about 30% of the players I'm matched against are platinum.
The reason I'm thinking of this as road to masters is, I'm not even platinum yet and I'm already setting goals for getting to Diamond.
I know once I'm platinum it will be my sole goal to get to top5 in my Platinum division and then practice enough to secure a promotion.
I'm thinking I will most likely be platinum in the next 15-45 games(depending on my performance/improvement), and from there my goal is to be Diamond by mid-July.
After I'm diamond... the only place to go is masters While I am a quick learner(I know I'm only high-gold but this is from almost 0 RTS 1v1 experience to about 100 1v1's played) I still like to give myself time because I'm slow(I play 0-3 games a day). I have creativity on my side though, my platinum friend(he's in the same position as me, on the tip of getting to diamond, 12 out of 15 last games won) thinks I will surpass him eventually simply because he plays "Standard" and I just kind of roll with whatever I think of and try to do fun stuff(I'm really big on burrow trickery, neural parasite, nydus worms, baneling drops, and proxy hidden spire/ultra cavern).
I don't know why I'm posting this as a blog because I honestly don't know how many people read these things. I guess to keep myself accountable?
I'd like to hope to be in Masters by the end of 2011, but we will see!
Thanks for reading :D
p.s. if you are mid plat to mid diamond and want to practice then add me 787 (NA server)

i am getting back into the game, i'd like to play with you some (i prefer 2v2 though, until i get used to the game again)
was diamond last season, but i only played like 25-30 games, and stopped about 3 months in (i think... about 6 months ago)

I'd play with you, though would customs not suffice instead of 2v2(I have a hard time taking it seriously, I offrace 2v2 with one friend and we do stupid stuff like mass sentry+mutalisk and I do another 2v2 with my friend where we do 8pool cannonrush only). Not a big fan of 2v2 unless it's for laughs
Like I said though, ID is 787 name is FacetiousQ

well, i don't really take anything seriously... i am just trying to learn the game (last night i made broodlords and the zerg air to air unit for the first time last night {i got diamond without ever making most of the sc2 units, just pretending i was playing BW})

CLAN Oo?????? fuck they were obnoxious ...

Good luck man! I was in your situation too. I started at bronze and just recently got to diamond. Hoping to hit masters soon ^^

Good luck with your goal
What race do you play? I'm reading your blog but you don't seem to mention your race

Really? I was only in it like the last 6months-1year of it's life, and 3 obnoxious people come to mind. But for the most part they were all pretty awesome people. I was mainly a part of it because of being friends with the leader and it was fun to sit in the channel and talk to people as I made maps (Don't worry I didn't make anything fabulous, just 2 maps and I had a 3rd half way done :p) Sorry for any bad experiences you had with them, but I don't know 90% of the people that were in the clan because I was only in it like 5% of it's lifespan :/
(Irrelevant but if anyone actually played UMS in SC2, map that got me into Oo: http://www.staredit.net/topic/2833/#56182 2nd map I made which was quite an awesome idea IMO: http://www.staredit.net/topic/3045/#60454 And as you can see it was like May 2008 and Oo died like that summer I think?)
And @frogmelter I play Zerg. I started the game doing mostly 2v2 as Protoss(because it was my favorite in SC2), then my friend asked me to change to terran because I wasn't doing great as protoss and he thought medivacs would help us a lot(he was zerg).
Then after watching Steven.Bonnell.II for a month simply because of humor value back in like december/january(he wasn't like amazing or anything, but I liked the BM :p now I can't really stand it), I decided to play zerg once and it all kind of "clicked". I had watched Destiny SO MUCH that I passively knew zerg hotkeys, when to inject, to spread creep, what buildings to make when(keep in mind I was in silver so this was a lot to just "understand" my first game as zerg). Now I'd say I'm a solid 50000x better than I was the first game :p but I obviously still have a lot to learn!

playing standard is actually the way to go, it may sound boring but playing the same build like 100000 times will get you really, really good. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=208343 Playing the same build a ziljon times may sound boring but in retrospect it might have been the thing bringing me to masters. I kinda went 1gate FE every game vs terran because i refused to back off. Despite having a lot of build order losses, i was to frustrated to switch. The build was really fit for improving because you really had to macro while microing. Like your economy kicked in when the typical terran all in (all they did back then) hit. I remember losing a TON of games because i lost a stalker early on, and i had to be aggressive to see what he was doing. with other words, it was the perfect opening for improving. also, gl with masters ^^

A couple of them tried arguing with me that Bounds and such UMS take more skills than melee on BW ;l.. I believe Oo was around 2009-2010 as well. Were you around that time?

No I quit like ~summer 2008 for WoW(Don't worry I quit that like a year later ^_^).
Who ever tried to argue that is silly. Most UMS is super easy(a lot even have "Secret cheats") and bounds just take timing/practice.
I always knew melee was too difficult and I couldn't force myself to learn it that late in SC1's career because everyone was too good, that's why I did mostly UMS.
Sorry for your bad experience with them :p I liked the few people I knew well(which was only like 4 of them, lol. It was pretty inactive by summer 2008).
And back on my topic: Been forcing myself to ladder today. Played 4 plats in a row, beat 2 of them. Evenly matched against all. Promotion INCOMINGGGGGGGGG

Minor update. Got out of the laddering ropes shortly after my last post on this because I had a bad day(but I wanted to force myself to ladder through it) and had like 7 losses in a row(getting my MMR back to high gold area). Turned me off of laddering for ~2ish weeks. Just started playing a few more games the past week. 12 of my last games, all of them were platinum players. 4 losses(One of which was actually a high gold player but it was actually a high diamond player that tanked his rating so he facerolled me). So I'm at like a 60-70%ish winrate against platinum players in my past 12 games sooo hopefully I can muster up the balls to play and finally get promoted?
(The rank-tanker http://www.sc2ranks.com/team/7929194#alltime ) (And when I checked his recent games his record was like 101-2 from the matches I could see LOL)
