I have decided to get back into some tabletop gaming after quite a while, found some models that have been lying around and collecting dust on my shelf and finally decided to assemble and paint them.
Since I lacked some motivation (it's really hard to not do this kind of stuff for extended periods of time and then getting back into it, mere thought of how much work it requires can drain all your resolve) so I decided to remedy it by signing up for a miniature painting contest.
As I'm a late entrant (very late) I only have 10 days to complete my stuff while others had 2 months on their hands.

So, with this brief introduction, I now open this blog where I will show the pics of various stages of work I did on my mini. Perhaps some of you will find it interesting and useful.
Also, I need some tips on photography. I managed to get a very decent shot of the mini today, but for reasons unknown to me (I'm complete noob when it comes to that) while the details are superb, the colors are much too lively (you can see the difference under Day 1 spoiler).

I have opted for my Ironclad Dreadnought as it's the only model I assembled so far. I have never painted anything like that so it's going to be good experience too.

This is the best picture I managed to take, the actual colors look different though:

What I managed to do was getting the base colour and highlight on the armour plating. I also drybrushed all of the metal parts with Tin Bitz so it's going to be easier to see how they really look like before applying the actual metal colors to them. I've found this technique to be really helpful in the past.

I finally managed to get all of the metal parts in their basic colour, also some extra stuff placeholders. It doesn't look to appealing at this stage but it's natural, now comes my favorite part - the details. So, during the next day or two, it should be finished and the end effect should look a lot better than this.

Had to hasten my painting to submit it on time as I missed 2 days due to irl shitstorm but managed to get it done.

Here's the end result.

@Beyonder: Don't have SC2

@LuDwig-: Of course it's not finished. This initial stage took me ~6 hours.

Seismic hammer. In game terms it's the same thing as the right arm (Dreadnought close combat weapon) but it pwns vehicles a lot harder.

That's pretty awesome. I got into the Warhammer universe from Dawn of War 2. I painted one, I think it was an officer of the space marines? I don't know it all too well. Good job though!

Nice painting man.

I've done SO much painting when I was younger. I used to paint miniatures all the time; warhammer, warhammer 40K, blood bowl, mithril LotR miniatures etc etc. Fun stuff

..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

Looks cool! Is that warhammer? Cant wait to see the finished project good job I've always wanted to get into this, but I would much rather buy finished pieces than paint them myself
Why?

Looks great, I could never paint my warhammer in a decent way, i think i ended up lightly brushing my space marines with silver paint all over to attempt to give a decent metal look to them.

Quite often the simplest techniques produce the best results.

Fantastic job! Inking really saved your but on some of those details

I love inks. It makes it easy for me to bring out details (since I am a pathetic painter).

Past Day 2 stage I really only inked the copper tubes (almost everything has 3 layers of highlighting on it at the least) I mainly have 3 purposes for using inks:

1. They help bring out the details (ie. it's easier for me to spot places I should highlight)
2. They're great for blending colours if you need to make smooth transitions after wet blending even smoother or after first 2 layers of highlighting to blend in the initial dark/mid/light tones for cleaner looks. The last part of highlighting must be done without inking so it stays in contrast with the rest.
3. To change the tone of some colours or turn metals into a different kind (ie. gold -> copper/bronze).
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.
