Fucking amazing. Bought this from Barnes and Noble this morning while browsing the History section. Finished the book at around 4 o'clock this afternoon.

Frederick Downs Jr. received four Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star with Valor, and the Silver Star for his service in the Vietnam War. He lives in Fort Washington, Maryland.

Amazing read, would definitely recommend it. I can only imagine the crap soldiers had to go through during the war. Not knowing who was the enemy be it an old man or a kid. Had to be terrifying.

Pick up The Things They Carried too. That's another really good book about Vietnam veterans, and also quite a literary masterpiece at the same time.

I liked The things They Carried more, but this is definitely awesome. This is one of 2 books I read for class in high school that I genuinely enjoyed.

It was good, but I don't know how many books about Vietnam I could stomach...

Also, just out of curiosity, have you read "A Long Way Gone" by Ishmael Beah?

I might pick this one up, sounds interesting.
My recommendation would be "When Heaven and Earth Changed Places" by Le Ly Hayslip, which centers around the life of Hayslip who lived in a village on the "line" between the north and the south. Reading about her life between the Americans and Vietcong was really captivating.

Another book that comes to mind would be Graham Green's "The Quiet American," which, however, talks about the French in Vietnam in the 1950s written from the view of a British reporter.

I liked it, and most people on the other sites I visit liked it.

It is also non-fiction; a memoir of a boy soldier from Sierra Leone.

I will definitely put the one in the OP on my list.
