The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

No, this is not a book review, but I figured to write a little story since you guys helped me out so much in my earlier book recommendation thread.

Ok, so earlier this day I went to a bookstore called Selexyz. As I entered the store I walked straight up to the English sci-fi / fantasy corner, since I'm cool like that. I took a friend with me who followed me around and started talking about a book called "Flat Land", which supposedly was an awesome book about people living in a 2D world and getting in touch with a being from a 3D world who then will forever change the view of the 2D people. (Anyone else has read this book before?). He seemed to be as excited about his recommendation as some of you guys were in my other blog thread.

In my mind I had already decided that I was going to find this awesome series. A song of Fire and Ice. Recommended by many, overrated by many, read by many, and unknown to me. I forgot the Author's name and I had some troubles finding the book. Some lady that worked there heard me mumbling about it and seemed very eager to help me out. As she started her quest to find the first book of this series I looked at my friend and said, "well, it seems everybody knows about these books, they must really be great!".

The girl however, turned around with a sad look on her face. Unfortunately the first book was out of stock, but she happily offered me to order the book, but I declined. I disappointingly searched on for Magician (by Feist), my plan B. I could find quite some books from these series, but they didn't have the first part, Magician, either. So I then figured to see if they had Flat Land instead, but I would soon find out that I my luck rating for today was below zero.

Being a bit frustrated I looked around me and scanned the books they did have. Hmmm.. Perhaps I should try the Discworld series? Hm. I was so close to grab the books, until I saw the number of volumes. It scared me. I didn't want to start something which would take up my time while I could most likely read something more to my liking.

Then I saw "The Name of the Wind", which I could recall from the earlier blog thread. As I sunk deep into my thoughts suddenly it came to me. FakeSteve & Daigomi both seemed to love this title, and I quickly took the book into my hands. 8 bucks, 7.95 actually. Seemed fine. Ok'ish cover.

I started my book ritual and let the book's pages flip through my fingers as I practiced one of my old habits. I SMELLED THE BOOK. I love the smell of OLD books. Like my epic LotR series, which are so old, the pages could tear just by looking at them. Ok, enough about my book fetish. The book was new and obviously didn't have this same smell.

I wondered if this would be my final decision. I looked at my cellphone to check the time and saw I spent way too much time in the book store already. This was going to be it. I went to the counter and flipped out my wallet.

I will stay away from this book until I entered the Airplane in 3 weeks. Thanks for the recommendation! I hope I won't be disappointed, which I highly doubt I will be.

The books sequel seems to be close to being published. I guess that in a month or so I will try to get my hands on A Song of Fire and Ice.

I guess I could also just have posted in the other thread, and tell you guys I went for the name of the wind. But I felt like telling a story. :D

Peace out.

Hmmmmm I don't think the discworld books are all linked, most are standalone I think.

Emphasis on "I think". Of course I could just google to find out but meh

Yeah, it's a really good choice. Easily the best fantasy book of 2008 I'd say. Book 2 was set to come out this month, but since then has been moved up to April 2010, and the author has stated that this is still only a tentative date, so I'm not sure when it will actually come out.

Discworld are separate novels (with very slight things carrying over, much like a sitcom or something). If you want to read one (they're nice and light reading), I'd suggest maybe starting with something like Moving Pictures or... The Truth. Both are quite good, and they both parody something everyone knows

Hope you enjoy your book! I'd love to hear what you think about it.

P.S. I always get embarassed when my girlfriend smells books. Such a creepy habit... :p

I'm really excited to start reading it, but if I start with just the first 2-3 chapters to get a little sneak peek I will probably be up for another 4-5 hours reading. I'll review the book when I've read it, even though I don't think I'll be able to really give good criticism since I'm not an experienced book reader.

I might give Discworld a try after. Just out of curiosity and to finally find out what the books really are like.

It has a strong technique, but it lacks oo.

It's a good book, but Steven Erikson's series Tales of the Malazan Empire is so much better. On par with asoiaf imo.

Flatland was really short, wasn't it? I'm not sure where my copy went, but it was an interesting quick read.

Chiming in with Name of the Wind 2008 Bonjwa. I actually don't even read fantasy. I am a science fiction guy. At one point when I ran out of books to read at home, my wife suggested it as a particularly good one. I was hesitant, but the writing was just too good to stop reading it after I started.

This thread is the first place that I've heard of a 2010 release date. I only read the book a few months ago and was hoping to nab it this summer. If that release date is accurate, it's a damned shame.

Read the First Law trilogy (starting with The Blade Itself) and you'll see the true fantasy Bonjwa.

At least it hasn't been as badly delayed as Dances with Dragons (book 5 of A Song of Ice and Fire). Many fans are actually starting to lose interest in the series because of the massive gap between A Feast for Crows and the fifth book =(

The Gentleman Bastards saga by Scott Lynch is a good read as well, though only two books are out at the moment.
Overcome all. Especially plateaus.

I can recommend to everyone who likes fantasy:

A malazan tale of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson,

A song of ice and fire series by George R.R. Martin,

The Wheel of time series I guess, not that super but its good and casual reading.

I really liked The name of the Wind and can't wait for the sequel to be released this year along with the 5th book in Scott Bakers series, the new Martin book and Dust of Dreams by Erikson.

Good stuff :p.

I absolutely HATED that trilogy, beyond predictable, terrible characters except the torturer (who was fucking AWSOMEEE), and a really unsatisfying ending.

I mean wow go to the end of the world foorrr.........~~~~ T_T

I'll recommend anyone not to pick up this series.

seriously, anyone who likes books AT ALL of any genre, go pick up Name of the Wind. Whether you're a fan of this genre or that, the book is so engaging, so well-written, so character driven that it sucks you in and doesn't let you out

I agree with FakeSteve, Name of the Wind is a great book although be warned: it ends abruptly and there is no sequel as of yet.
