I just finished watching John Carpenter's 'The Thing.' and I've got a hankering for some decent(ly gore-filled.) pre-CGI (or atleast from within the period before *good* CGI.) horror/sci-fi movies.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I really enjoy seeing how special FX teams worked before the introduction of a slight over-reliance (Hello Star Wars Prequels.) upon CGI. Their creative solutions to how to make horror interesting (and sometimes believable.) are pretty cool in many instances.

I've seen most of the big 'franchise' horror series like Friday the 13th, Halloween etc so anything a little more obscure is great too.

Dawn of the Dead is fucking awesome! Don't expect a scary horror movie, but there are tons of "OH NOOOO" moments. Really entertaining.

I agree with this. Dawn of the Dead is the most awesome zombie movie ever. It's more shocking than scaring but its really worth it.

Have you watched the classic called Braindead? If not, then you should watch that asap! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103873/ Although I think it is not scary at all but rather a hilarious movie (e.g. one zombie humping another).

I never watch scary movies by myself...honestly, I'm a pansy (except for Silent Hill...I love that movie's visuals enough so that I rewatch it occasionally).

I always watch them with friends, though. I'm like the stereotypical black woman in the audience...I can't stay quiet. I love it...so much fun to have the shit leave your rectum from getting scared so badly when you're with friends. (:

The Prowler and The Burning are two classics from 1981 with effects made by the legendary Tom Savini.

The Toxic Avenger from 1985, known for being the splatter pioneer, it's pretty funny and not that over the top sick. their budget was pretty much nothing but they still managed to create somewhat convincing effects using stuff like a carved out melon filled with crushed hamburgers.

Critters 1-4, not really scary, kind of reminds you of Gremlins, pretty funny seeing a young Leonardo Di Caprio in the third one.

The Gate from 1987 with a really young Stephen Dorff, this is one underrated horror movie, it's like nobody knows it exists.

Haute Tension (High Tension) from 2003, this is one of the best "modern" horror movies i have seen, the story is amazing and the effects by Gianetto De Rossi are just as amazing, everyone needs to see this movie!

Zombi (or Zombie Flesh Eaters) an italian classic from Lucio "The Godfather of Gore" Fulci, it has one of the most memorable gore scenes ever filmed, you'll know when you see it. Also there is a scene with a Zombie fighting a shark underwater!
We make signature, then defense it.

You absolutely have to watch "Braindead". It's more hilarious than scary though.

Is REC. CGI?

If you want BLOOD try Braindead.

Feast trilogy are incredibly good movies, although they were made after 2000. They do not include much CGI, because the budgets were quite low

"Dead Alive" - Peter Jackson. Brittish Zombies. Any questions?

EDIT: After a trip to IMDB Dead Alive is apparently the US release of Braindead. So yeah, these people know what they speak!

I dunno if it's classified as strictly horror but "Misery" by Stephen King is pretty awesome.

I know that deep inside of you there's a humongous set of testicles just waiting to pop out. Let 'em pop bro. //////////////////// AKA JensOfSweden // Lee Yoon Yeol forever.

I loved that movie - it's by far the best Stephen King adaptation aside from The Shining imho. Thanks again everyone This will keep me going for a while.
