Any of you seen gundam wing? Hiro Yui is the man. I'm wasn't into anime, I thought (and still do) 99% of it is shit. Bull-chested purple-haired women screaming in annoying asian voices spreading their legs for inadequate undeserving men struggling through generic and predictable crises.
Anyway, my friend recommended this series to me a while ago. It has big robots, so I watched the first 2 episodes. I thought it was dumb. The hell? This is the entire gist of the story, so no spoiler: Mr. Main Character finds this immortal girl completely by chance. She gives him the power to command people to do whatever he wants, so long as they look in his eyes.
I stopped watching after seeing the direction this was going to develop. The robots really weren't that cool compared to gundams, too.
Then, at the start of the summer, the same friend who recommended it to me told me they had a season 2. This interested me. They were successful enough to keep going? Or are people just o.k. with crap nowadays?
I started watching it again. This would decide whether or not I would dabble in anime. The series was still just...dumb. There is something about great pieces of writing and media, and that something is an authentic world. The dune series, the gundam series, whatever it may be, the world just has that thing. Code Geass didn't, but I stuck with it.
There was a defining moment when the series actually took my interest: I doubted the main character. I actually started to hate him. My interest was more than just perked, it got a full-on boner. Despite the lack of cool robots (they have tires on them for heaven's sake) and a lack of a world that has that thing, what on earth was this? A series that actually made me want to hate the main character? What's going on?
I just finished the last episode of season 2. The ending...I should have seen it coming. It's how the story should end, but not how I wanted it to end. Not that I'm comparing this to a classic, but the feeling is the same: kind of like the end of great expectations. Mrs. Richy Mcpants hot that pip is gaga over the entire story rides through the countryside, glances at him, and that's that. End of story. Wtf? It's how it should end, but it's not how I want it to end.
But it was brilliant. It was utterly brilliant. The story finally took on the darker tones and motives that it needed to the entire time. The world gained a sense of truth and finality that it was lacking the whole time. I never saw it coming.
Anyway if you don't get that about great expectations sorry. I recommend that if you're bored over the summer and can't spend time with friends, watch this series. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.
Oh, and also, the robots become really tight later on. It's like...this series was a flat-chested girl at the beginning of the summer, and now that the summer's over I wanna sleep with her.
Two things that would have myself do if I were watching this for the first time over:
1) Suspend my disbelief. This series would've been entirely more enjoyable from the start if I had done this. My narrow-mindedness and judgement of anime caused me to force myself into it, kind of.
2) Pay attention to what the characters say, closely. They reveal far more about the characters than they seem like they do. This series is a fucking guessing game. I like calling the endings to movies very early on, and I'm usually accurate enough my friends no longer let me say out loud what I think. I was completely wrong this series, consistently.
Anyway, this is my opinion. If you're more interested in this series, look it up. If not, now you know.
It is time to rock. It is time to have fitness.

I liked code geass. The ending kinda made me meh tbh.

I don't know why people even want what Ziph posted to be true.

i liked code geass too. a lot!

I agree with the OP analysis. I watched ep1 and thought it was retarded. Ep 2 didn't do much to keep it going either. I was just really bored and kept watching. I'm glad I kept watching. Very good series and the ending makes up for any points where it seems to drag on.
I'm still a hardcore Death Note fan, as I finished that like a month ago and was in shock by how amazing it was.
|
Being a big Gundam fan, I was reluctant at first, as you were about the series. But it pretty much grew on me and well I loved it and its totally worth the watch. A lot of twisted crap occurs in it sigh... Sidetracking a bit, uh if anyone finds this series entertaining give Gundam 00 a shot as well as "Seven Samurai"...I man enough to admit I cried at the end of Seven Samurai.

Do you mean Death notes first season, or the whole thing? I watched the first season and loved it but I stopped there because I thought the rest would just be milking the series.
- Also anyone wanna recommend me their favorite gundam season/show? I want to get into it but I want to have a good first impression.
|
haha clamp never ceases to amaze me :D their plots usually start out slow but the next thing you know you watched the whole season in a sitting lol. i admit i qqed at the end of R2, more from shock than anything tho =P
as for gundam, if you're starting out something like Gundam Wing or Gundam 00 are great. don't touch the gundam seed series (including seed astray + destiny). The Universal Century series are imo a bit more for hardcore Gundam fans so it might be harder to get into.
If you like more realistic Gundam action (none of that godmode laser and invincible pilot stuff) I really recommend Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team
|
Gundam Zeta and MS 08th are probably the best Gundam series.
edit: Norris Packard was pretty beast in 08th MS Team, everyone else was scrubby/normal..no newtypes or Aces (save packard) to be found.
|
Gundam Wing was a horrible series. The only good Gundam series is 08th MS Team and that's it.
Code Geass was ok...I almost dropped it by the end of episode 2 (just like you, OP) because of how annoying the MC was and how weird the pacing was. It was just too corny and too like...dramatic or whatever. I love anime, too...but somehow I kept going.
Personally, I thought the first season was good (+ Show Spoiler +except for the one queen girl getting geass'd and killing all the japos...that was seriously the most retarded plot twist I've EVER seen , and the first half of the second season was forgivable. The second half of the second season was sooo fucking stupid...they ended the show like four times. The actual ending was pretty good, though, and wrapped everything up quite well, I thought. In any case, it made me almost like the MC again after hating him for nearly every other episode... -____-;;
|
Yeah, I was much the same and stopped watching after the first two eps, only to pick it up againt on a friend's recommendation. Glad I did. Agreed with the second season opinion- it just wasn't as high quality as the first, despite a few good moments.

I'd rather be called a treacherous whore than lie to myself. (;

Code Geass is by far my favorite anime, but i would give season 1 only a 8/10 and season 2 a 5 or 6.
I really like the characters, i liked that for once the main character was not a self righteous teenager talking about friendship have the show, and it was just a really fun and charming show, despite the inmense stupidity of some parts of the story.

+1.
I disagree with you OP about the mecha, i personally enjoy a lot more the realistic type of mechas and combat (08th MS Team FTW) than the demi god robots from Wing, Seed and 00.

Series was good but there were many problems
1, Way too many episodes where they did not do anything. I mean they were supposed to be comic relief, but it just didnt fit.
2, Lelouch used the same strat way too many times. Every single time, he pwns his enemies by collapsing the ground under the group of enemies and this gets very repetitive.
3, Ending feels very rushed...
Btw u know the bomb in the anime? Freya? Doesnt it sound like for aiur being said really fast? All i know is that lelouch would pwn at starcarft.
|
@maga33:
I agree, the ending felt rushed. It's almost like they were like "shit we're almost up to our 25 episode limit for this season, lets rush all the plot and squeeze everything in at the last minute". I still loved this anime, very comparable to Death Note (in quality) imo.
|
If Code Geass is your favorite anime, and it averages a 6.75/10 as a whole (taking a 5.5 score for the second season), you must not like anime all that much. o.o
|
Holy good god there are people out there who didn't like Lelouche? lol I could understand hating Suzaku (like I did) but Lelouche?! Interesting.
Also, Gundam Wing now has lost a lot of its luster, but for its time it was excellent.
|
lol ppl don't realize when gundam wing debuted in 1995 it was amazing. of course if you watch a 15 year old anime the production quality is gonna seem mediocre compared to the stuff now, but its still got a decent plot and character development (which is more than can be said for a shitload of series now)
the original mobile suit gundam (and char's counterattack) were decent for epic space opera-type series too :D (RX78-2 ftw)

Yeah I watched this about a year ago as well. I absolutely loved how they ended season 2 (and the whole anime) I can't recommend this enough.
|
Agreed, the ending absolutely blew me away. I just wish that they had spaced it out over another episode or two. I can understand the comments above about how the ending felt rushed. I still think it was a superb way to end it, it just seemed like everything went so quickly in the course of an episode.
