What passing-bells for these who die as cattle? Only the monstrous anger of the guns. ~Wilfred Owen [Killed during the Battle of the Sambre(1918)]
I find it odd that through the many documentaries, specials, news reports, movies, television mini-series that people just seem to forget about the First World War. I think it is sad that in Washington D.C. there isn't a more remembering monument to the first generation of Americans who went over seas to fight and the many who never came back. I understand World War II was larger in scope but World War I was more horrendous and confusing.
Every generation that helped better the world or gave the ultimate sacrifice is great I think.

I find WW1 very interesting actually. I've always liked machine guns and trench warfare and the way the war was fought. It seemed like THE 20th century war.

Stuck with Civil War tactics but modern weapons that werent used to their full extent or purpose.

First ever war to use poison gas! The 4th image looks like a civil war picture.

Civil war tactics? I don't believe they were civil war tactics, more like the traditional movement based combat.

LOL THIS. Seriously i read somewhere that either side would gain something like 5 feet a day, and sometimes occupy the same trenches which they had been shooting at a week before.

If everyone in the world understood each other, there wouldn't be this sort of thing ):
But what do I know, I'm only a fucking A-level student

Read the lyrics of a song about the utter failure of Churchill when trying to secure an island against Mustafa Kemal.
Cliffs Of Gallipoli
Hear them whisper voices from the other side Hear them calling for the both sides friends are resting side by side
They will never leave our hearts or fade away Live forever They were far too young to die in such a way
How many wasted lives? How many dreams did fade away? Broken promises they won't be coming home Oh mothers wipe your tears your sons will rest a million years Found their peace at last as foe turn to friend and forgive And they knew they'd die
Gallipoli Left their letters in the sand Such waste of life Gallipoli Dreams of freedom turn to dust
Hell is waiting Where the ocean meets the sand Cliffs of burden where the soldiers rushed into a certain death [Cliffs Of Gallipoli Lyrics On http://www.elyricsworld.com/ ] At the shoreline blood of heroes stains the land Light a candle one for each of them who fought and died in vain
There is no enemy there is no victory Only boys who lost their lives in the sand Young men where sacrificed the names are carved in stone and kept alive And forever we will honour the memory of them And they knew they'd die
Gallipoli Left their letters in the sand Such waste of life Gallipoli Dreams of freedom turn to dust
There are roads which must not be followed, armies which must not be attacked, towns which must not be besieged positions which must not be contested.

Nice pics. Reminds me of how crazy war is. Just hordes of countryman organized together to kill people from other nations for their cause. Each soldier for the most part struggling to keep his sanity through all the brutal moral challenges, for the greater good. Plus conscription... that's another layer of ugly. Politicians deciding what is the greater good and putting people in jail for not fighting....

But great job at tearing itself apart and helping propulse the american century.

There is a very good documentary done by the BBC in 96, called"The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century". It goes over 8 hours so it is more indepth than any other documentary I've seen on the subject, though obviously its no replacement for a book. The most f*cked part is where they discuss post traumatic stress disorder or whatever they called it at the time, its quite shocking really.
I think I heard WW1 best characterised as 19th century tactics with 20th century weapons, can't remember who said it, but it seems to make sense
