So one of my friends mentioned the other day that he had never seen Pulp Fiction. Everybody else in the room at the time immediately started talking about having a movie night to rectify that. And then we started talking about the greatest movies of all times. I haven't lived through all of time, but I think Pulp Fiction is definitely up there for best of last 20 years. So this is a blog post about Pulp Fiction. Almost everyone's seen this movie multiple times, but somehow, no one ever minds seeing it again.
What a bad mother fucker

Just admit it, you've tried to memorize the bible verse before.
A milkshake connoisseur. I thought everyone learned in 1st grade that you're not supposed to snort heroin
Medieval times, bitches.
How much to keep this guy on retainer?
A note on the "I'm getting Medieval on your ass" scene. I actually had a class in college (a real class with a real professor, not one of those decals you Berkeley people like to call classes) called "Getting Medieval." It was a music history class that looked into perceptions of what "medieval" means to people, amongst other things. Talk about pop culture influence. Pulp Fiction is timeless. It will elicit the same reactions from people who see is 15 years from now as it did back in 1994. It's the only movie I can think of that could be an audio book. Somehow, it's deep, shallow, stylized, raw, tragic, and humorous all at the same time. I can't see how there will never be a movie remotely like it ever again.
No one gives a damn about Marvin:

Poll: Is Pulp Fiction the greatest movie of the last 20 years? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No
Edit: Ok, just to make it more interesting: If you voted no, post ONE movie that you consider to be better than Pulp Fiction made in the same time period.

|
Time to add a new option to the poll: "One of the greatest".
|
Pulp Fiction is an awesome movie, but it did have its low points as much as it had its highs. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's the best movie since 1989 - there are a LOT of great 90's movies that I'm sure a lot of the younger TL people have not seen.
|

Yea what he said.
|
Everyone already knows it's one of the greatest. It's ok to vote no.
|
My favorite movie hands down.
|
Yep, I enjoyed Pulp Fiction but I don't think it's the 'greatest'. In fact, I don't think any movie is the 'greatest', at most I can list a few as my 'personal favourites' and even then it's pretty tough. I just can't subjectively pick an objective list!
|
refraise the poll to one of the greatest... not the greatest imo since you keep talking about how its one of the greatest not the greatest.
kick ass movie though
|
|
It's the reason the world got to know Samuel L. Jackson.
That alone is a great contribution to the world.
|
I think its an excellent movie but I always liked Reservoir Dogs better, imo that is Tarantinos best movie.

the greatest movie of the last 20 years? no certainly not (hello private ryan *cough*) the greatest gangster film of the last 20 years? that would be a though one, but i'd say sin city (which is to me very similar to pulp fiction) is better the greatest movie of 1994? no that would be shawshank redemption
but yeah, its a pretty fucking good movie. i dont know if its worth 5 dollars, but its pretty fucking good

I don't think it's a really good movie. It's OK.

"Tried"? Hah, kid, I DID memorize Ezekiel 25:17
It's one amazing movie, but I wouldn't call it the best movie of the last 20 years, but its definitely in the top... 10.
|
wow. i hated that movie. :| lol only one movie? Shawshank Redemption
oh, i see i was beat to it, so, A Bronx Tale.

That's a fake quote in the movie, totally nonsense.
|
Awesome movie, but certainly not the best. As someone noted, Shawshank came out the same year, and that was great.
|
The only director that could be better than Tarintino is Kubrick imo

It's actually an adaptation of a real quote, modified by Tarantino and Samuel L. Jackson for dramatic effect.

Requiem for a Dream, Pi, Old Boy... Are just some movies that I think are better. Of course you will have no chance persuading the LotR/Star Wars/Dark Knight people either.
|
I actually hadn't seen it either until a while ago. I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. My favorite part was when Bruce Willis fucking samurai sliced that sexual pervert.
|
Definitely own it, my girlfriend hasn't seen it so I might be watching it again very soon.

Dark Knight was good, but that was vastly overrated by everyone last year.
Star Wars... Lucas took a fat dump on that thing with the most recent three. They're not bad movies, but no where close to the original three. Any humor was over-the-top cheesey (JAR JAR) and he seemed much more content just using up his budget to make a flashy, attention grabbing movie rather than a really good one.

And that's true too. But a lot of new-age Star Wars fans don't see it that way, from what my loser friends told me it caused a big division in the fanbase between old school and new school fans. Kind of like old school TL members and noobs who only like Bisu.

I think the best way to describe it is that the new gen Star Wars just weren't 'epics'. Everything about the first three just seemed grand, larger than life (I think the awesome music had a lot to do with it). Like, no random battles just cuz.
The new gen seemed so filled with shit that just seemed like the CG guys showing off... the Duuku and Yoda fight made me want to get up and punch every faggot that cheered in the theatre when I was there.
In the new gen, the only two fight scenes (or really any scenes) that seemed epic were the Darth Maul fight (might actually be my favor in all six) and the one where Anikin gets defeated and tossed into the lava right before he's scooped up by the Emperor and turned into Vader.
Anywho, /end nerd rant.

yeah bisu is just flashy not good imo

Pulp Fiction is awesome but there is no movie as rewatchable and entertaining for me as Fight Club. Still it is without a doubt one of the best movies in the past 20 years.
|
Movies about animals which can do sports. Last week I saw one about a dog who could play basket ball. This week I saw one about a monkey who could snowboard. Awesome.

But there are some kids who take it to the extreme.

Its kind of funny how much of a cult following this movie has, I actually haven't even ever seen it though... I guess I should go check it out based on some of the comments here.

Yeah Shawshank Redemption. I was baffled when I saw that.

I can agree that Shawshank is some stiff 1994 competition. One of the dumbest decisions of all time that neither one came away with the Oscar that year.

I googled to see what the winner was... no way Forrest Gump gets it over those two. And shit, I don't even know the other two movies that got nominated.

well forrest gump is also a very good movie, i dont know why everyone says that either shawshank redemption or pulp fiction should have won best picture that year. i guess its cause tom hanks got the award for leading role..
btw i just realize, léon is also from '94. god what a great year

I think fight club made the most impact on the internet for a movie.

hmm, martin scorsese, capolla, alfred hitchcock and kubrick are all better than tarantino imo.
I think shawshank redemption is a pretty dam overrated movie tbh. I don't think it would make my top 100 list.
The main difference between old star wars and new star wars for me was, in the old star wars the director made us like the characters as much as possible, with a good script and huge amounts of development, with good plot-ect. We see luke and his crew go through a lot of phases throughout the movies. The new stars the had the director made us hate the characters as much as possible. With ridiculous amounts of boring political stuff, shitty script, terrible acting. We don't see any good character development until star wars episode 3.
As for my favourite movies: Taxi driver, Apocalypse Now, mulholland drive, goodfellas, Godfather part 1 and 2. A Clockwork orange, spirited away, Eyes wide shut, Pulp fiction, trainspotting, Battleship Potemkin, Stalker, Lord of the rings, Fight club, Infernal Affairs, Lotr Triology, Empire strikes back and A New hope, iron man, the dark knight, Casino, The departed, Terminator 1 and 2, Alien, Aliens, Bladerunner, Casablanca, Akira, Seven Samurai, Battle Royale, The Lion King, toy story1and2, Pans Labyrinth, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Dr. Strangelove, Schindlers list, United 93, Inland Empire, The straight Story, memento, This is spinal Tap, Metropolis. Fear and Loathing in Las Vagas.
Any of those movies in made in the last 20 years have my vote for being some of the greatest.

I can think of a bucnh better or equal to pulp fiction. It's still a really good movie though.
