Poll: Do you listen to music while you study?

Do you guys listen to music while you study? I am studying for my finals, geometry right now because its tomorrow morning. If you do listen to music, does it help or anything?

I need some reasons if it will actually help me study/concentrate and how music correlates with personal individuals and not all those websites that say "Music is bad. Just coz"

If I'm being serious, of course not. If I don't really care or I'm just memorizing it probably even helps.

It hurts when studying logic because you cant talk to yourself. Talking to yourself and explaining things to yourself using words is the only sure way to make sure you understand something. music defiantly impedes upon this. Trust me, music will hinder you if the material is hard. (just like T.V. or someone talking on the phone, or anything else that makes noise.)

What you w ant to do with Math is explain everything and why it is like that to yourself while working on problems. If you can't do this 2 or 3 times for each different type of problem then you need to get your shit in gear.

Yes, but I make sure it's in another language or instrumental so I don't get distracted.

Same here. If there is english then I can't focus w/music. With math though, it's mostly just exercises over and over so I can listen to music w/o much distraction.

I've found that listening to music during finals is AMAZING. Sadly most university teachers dont let you :\ (o noez i might record all the answers into a .wav file)

I mostly listen to trance when i study. Trance with no words or anything and from trance.fm a great radio site. With that sort of as a background sound, would that perhaps help?

I actually did an experiment with this for a class where we surveyed a bunch of student on their study habits and my data showed music will distract you. But then again it was just a joke experiment for extra credit so....

This. If it's easy or I'm writing a paper I can get away with music with lyrics (usually taking headphones off when I really need to concentrate) but otherwise instrumental is the way to go. NIN's Ghost is great for it.

I did in class even though the teachers went mad if they caught you. But for serious revision work I agree with micronesia.

Even though I prefer silence I acknowledge that some people do better with some kind of music or background noise.

Same here. And it's mostly when I start studying, just to make the transition a bit smoother, going from fun to, well, not fun and mandatory studying. Most of the times I 'll fade it out after a while, and put it back on to get pumped when I'm taking a break. My choice of music lately is either an A State of Trance episode, or something metal (Amorphis, Hypocrisy, Pain of Salvation, Metallica) or Tool. Last year I used to play For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica every time I took a break, there's a music video on youtube for it:

Man that shit got me pumped, just singing along for 10 minutes and then resuming study work. :D

While music makes studying alot more bearable I'm pretty sure it decreases your studying proficiency, I remember reading something in the NY Times I believe. That has not stopped me though. I listen to music when memorizing vocabulary for languages and doing math homework. Trying to study history with music though seems impossible.

i can't concentrate with music on. i start to sing or hum along with it instead of thinking about the work i have to do haha. i need silence to concentrate so library is the best for me

Same, I only use it when I gonna do something that I know what to do, like writing something like a web page. When I need to concentrate like understanding a math problem I need it totally silent.
