I've thought about making this thread for a while now so here it is:
I used to listen only to comemercial shit when I was young such as 50 cent or Simple plan or anything that was at the radio at the time. Until I met a new friend when I was 15 who was playing guitar and really got me into listening to old rock from the 70's and it really opened me on new music.
I began by listening AC/DC and metallica since I guess it is more commercial and easier to listen when you don't really like that kind of music at first:
Then I began listening to Nirvana and guns n' roses wich are a bit different but still awesome bands:
From there I finally discovered my favorite group as of today: Led Zeppelin
I listen to alot of other groups as of today such as The Doors, Jethro Tull, The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc. I won't post them all sinc it'll be too long to load but if you like that kinda music too, post your favorites so hopefully I can discover other great bands.
There's not much discovering to be done for 70's rock bands. The good ones are well-known by now. To suggest a couple bands you might not have listened to, check out Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Moody Blues.
King Crimson - All their albums, each song is worth listening (altho their progressive). They have such a different sound to all their albums (sure they changed lineups a lot) but Robert Fripp is really the heart and soul of the band.
I won't add mass videos, take the time to discover them by yourself, you won't be let down I can assure you
Lynyrd Skynyrd The Allman Brothers Band The Who CCR The Doors The Kinks Aerosmith Blue Oyster Cult Fleetwood Mac Boston Black Sabbath Judas Priest Bruce Springsteen Queen Cream Eric Clapton U2 Don McLean Bon Jovi Journey Meatloaf
There's more, but I just got off an 8 hour shift :p

Anyway I'm just posting to brag about how I just got tickets to see AC DC. Easily one of the better acts to Australia has produced.
Yes, they are mainstream, but not in the sense that he is talking about. You won't hear Free Bird on the pop radio tomorrow morning (if I did I might just jizz in my pants).
EDIT: <3 for putting my favorite Zep song in the vids (Black Dog)
Not all really 70s. More like classic rock, with a little alt in there.
Check out Deep Purple (http://www.playlist.com/searchbeta/tracks#highway%20star), Frank Zappa, The Animals, The Kinks, The Clash, Soundgarden, for stuff in line with some of the bands you named.
