The original Breath of Fire 2 on the SNES was a pretty good RPG, but it had one of the WORST translations in terms of quality. Various things were mistranslated and the script was littered with spelling and grammar errors, as you can see replicated here. The GBA port was not much better: while it added running and a few cutscenes, most if not all of the script was kept intact. It's a shame, because the game had some kick-ass music and varied characters, but the script really brought the game down.
Last month however, Ryusui (working with d4s who did the German fan-translation) released a complete retranslation patch that is much much better than the original, which you can find here. So check it out if you want to feel nostalgic  (Also, it has running! So apart from cutscenes there is no reason to play the GBA version :D )
Note that you'll need an unheadered US rom but it's real simple to delete the header by getting SNESTool or something. And since you'll probably be using snes9x or ZSNES, just rename the .ips file to whatever-your-bof2-rom-is.ips, put it in the same folder as your .smc rom and you're set to go~

BoF2 is one of my top 3 games, and always has been, but it didn't seem to have a very bad script. Looking at the script now, it still doesn't seem nearly as bad as most SNES JRPGs.
Anyway, checking it out. Good looking out.

Hm, good find. I'm not really much of a fan of retranslation efforts though (why don't these teams put their efforts into games with notranslation *cries*), because it doesn't make too much of a difference IMHO.
You should put "it has running" in bold, btw.

I felt the same way too about the FF6 retranslation (which personally I didn't think was really worth it). But to me, replaying this with the retranslation is really like playing a separate game simply because the retranslation doesn't have any of the long pauses ........... all over the place, and the dialogue/word choice flows much better imo.
Not that much of a fan of the name changes though, I miss Katt

Yeah, like I said, I'll definitely try it out. Any excuse to play the game through once more works for me.

BoF2 was good, but I liked Final Fantasy 2 more.
Chrono Trigger was by FAR the best snes RPG I played. The closest was Mario RPG right behind it and FF2 and BoF2 behind that.
Speaking of Chrono Trigger!! They just remade it for the Nintendo DS. I had to order one <3 This should be fun :D They apparently kept the game the same and just added a few extra side quests.

Breath of Fire II was an amazing game, just had a great, dynamic story. The dungeons were awful at times, and I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing at other times, but other than that the game was great.

Oh this is a blog, no one will see this How do I apply the translation to the rom? I'm using BizHawk for an emulator, and I don't have a .mfc file at all.
