So if they ever come up with a good medicine you know who to thank. Also caffeine helps with headaches.

Thank god the frequency of my migraines has calmed down. Lack of sleep and booze (and possibly allergies) are now my main triggers though ![]() They took a few vials of cerebrospinal fluid through the puncture which was the main point of the research (they do this by putting a needle in your back), and a few vials of blood from my arm, which they are going to compare with the fluid/blood of people with migraine. It was a pretty interesting procedure alltogether, not to mention I got a free lunch and 100 euro's for it. Not that it's worth being very sick for nearly a week, but the chances of that happening was only 1 in 8 I was told. Then the week after during the blood patch to fix me up they injected some anasthetic into my back and took 3 vials of blood from my arm and injected it near the place that was punctured earlier which amazingly worked nearly instantly (well after I was done throwing up lol).

You did it through school or just a random test?? And back to the op, sleep is the best bet. Nothing else kills a migraine like sleep

Actually you're right I reasoned because abstention from caffeine after repeated use can result in headaches it worked the other way around. Caffeine contstricts blood vessels in the brain, thereby decreasing its blood blood supply, upon which a lack of caffeine produces an increase in bloodflow to the brain that can cause a headache. I should've said, if you drink caffeine, keep doing so.

Caffeine contstricts blood vessels in the brain, thereby decreasing its blood blood supply . wouldnt constricted blood vessels increase pressure thus the blood supply stays the same? The primary effect of vasoconstriction (with no other factors involved) would be to divert blood flow, as the blood will take the path of least resistance. Remember, in this particular example, only vessels in the head are constricted, so the blood is free to travel elsewhere. BP would increase slightly because total vascular volume would be diminished (while blood volume stays the same) but not enough to maintain the original bloodflow to the head. This is all assuming heartrate and force of contraction stay the same. However I've no idea if vasoconstriction in the head is actually one of the effects of caffeine, and I'm also pretty sure caffeine actually does increase heart rate and force of contraction, but for the sake of your example (with vasoconstriction and no other effect) blood supply will not be maintained. So now that only leaves us to consider what the heck is "blood blood" supply? :p

What I do for both temporary and long term relief is this: Short Term: Often times the blood flow is too fast or too hot and causing your brain to overload or something so what I do is just press my hand(s) around my neck/juggular and reduce the blood flow/pressure. 6/10 times this will instantly relieve some pressure. Not too hard, but just firm enough so you can feel some relief. Another thing I do is splash cool water (not ice cold) around my neck, ears, head and face. This will reduce the body temp, but not so much that it tries to warm up. Think if it like perspiring normally. Repeat every 15 minutes or so. I have also heard that you can place lemon/lime wedges on your temples and I believe this is the same effect as the water splashing basically. Most headaches are caused from dehydration in my experience. Long Term: Drink lots of water. Start with an 8oz glass or more and repeat every 15 minutes or so. Take a vitamin, the lack of nutrients may be causing your body to overwork itself, and besides a vitamin never hurt anyone (afaik). Get some rest, When you sleep your brain shifts into different modes and doesn't work as hard. Sometimes all you need is a 30 minute nap or even a few hours and that generally cures my headaches (especially coupled with the other methods I use). Another thing that might help for both short and long term is to take a cool/midly warm shower (possibly about the same temp or a little less than 98.6°F . Your body will absorb some of the water as well as cool off. Every time I am hungover Its a struggle to get there but the shower always always helps. I'll just sit in the tub for 20 min and rest with the shower on if its bad enough. Things to Avoid when having a headache: Light. Probably has something to do with eye strain, so avoid computer/tv and darken a room as much as possible while you nap or whatever. Physical activity, the added perspiration and strain on the body will add to your headache, trust me. I used to play/skateboard so hard when I was a kid and not drink enough water and come home at sundown and Bam! migraine, puking and everything. Worst shit ever. Heat, the body works harder when its hot. It also requires and expels more water. This is why I find yourself tossing and turning in bed and flipping the pillow to the cool side all the time. These are just what works for me, everyone is different and I'm not saying these are 100% fool proof methods. I get all kinds of headaches; isolated/mild eye headaches or back of the neck/head, all over - throbbing/pounding, migraines, etc. My methods work to some degree for all of them. PS- does anyone ever have the urge when hungover/headache to masturbate? And the act causes the headache to worsen, but seems to help allieviate the strain after completetion.

Besides, just like any other pain killer or something, all that it is doing is covering up symtems instead of solving the problem. Next time you get a headache, just think of how much water you drank that day. I bet it wasn't enough. You are supposed to drink about 8x8oz glasses of water a day. Perspiring alone (even without physical activity) will consume a few cups a day. And remember, some foods (mostly fruits/vegies) do provide water in them but others just eat up water in digestion process (such as processed foods and other harder to digest things). When you are thirsty its your body telling you that you are dehydrated. So drink water before you get thirsty throughout the day.
