completely irrelevant, with their Million man army, any coalition will be forced to extensively bomb N korea, which unfortunately may turn into a nuclear confrontation.

What...? N. Korea's sole purpose is that they will turn Seoul into a lake of fire if they push the nuke button there is no winners on either side, not even N. Korea is dumb enough to nuke the South since it would also affect them as well. Sure they might issue it as a last resort when they realize they are completely alone. Not even China wants a war, nuclear or not.
And million man army, not to sound like a jackass but N. Korea better have a lot more if they want to start World War III.

But this is correct. China gets very profitable business from it's neighbor S. Korea. And although China supported N. Korea back during the Cold War, China has become a much more business oriented nation. Their economy is growing at a monster rate, and they don't want N. Korea to hinder that in any way. Although they are both "communist" nations, that doesn't mean they support each other. China's economic system has gone through much improved reform whereas N. Korea is in the dark-ages still.
If N. Korea attacks S. Korea, they're going to be all alone. Unless S. Korea (or an ally) is held responsible for something diplomatically foolish.

how do you think Americans invaded IRAQ?
|
NK does this everytime they want attention. I just read an article that mentioned several other instances of NK threatening war in just the last few decades.
|
North Korea have been complete douche bags in diplomatic talks over the last few decades. This is not the first time they've taken something as a "declaration of war", and have threatened a breaking of the armistice. The only reason why people are paying more attention now is because they claim to have had now two successful nuclear weapons tests. The US is still investigating, apparently.
Even if they have, China, who is N. Korea's strongest and perhaps only real ally, will NOT allow them to go to war under any circumstances. At this point, China even looks down upon the North's nuclear weapons program, and is not in support of where things are heading. This is good news.
If North Korea ignores China and goes ahead with all this, they will truly be fucked. They will have the full force of the US on their ass, as well as China not helping at all.

Japan is an economic power, but since WWII, they have not been a major military power. The US takes care of Japan's military interests. India has its own issues with domestic problems as well as strife and tension in its immediate surroundings. South Korea is in a weakened state right now, and between the two, North Korea has a more immediately threatening military.
It's obvious that North Korea will lose should war break out, but the problem...the BIG PROBLEM that no one seems to be concerned about is the number of people, both noncombatants and soldiers, in South Korea that will die before international retaliation can bring the conflict to a close.
I have family in Korea as well. I don't want a conflict to break out. Just because North Korea won't win doesn't mean that South Korea won't lose. Think a little, holy fucking shit.

Why are people drawing comparisons between this and the US/Iraq war. Now I do support the latter, but that's besides the point. The people who don't support it feel that way because they feel US had no business being there, there was nothing going on. Fair enough. This is only going to escalate because N. Korea bombs someone. Now who is really going to say "There was nothing going on!" after that?
Post above ended with a good point, this won't be as pretty as it seems. S. Korea will unfortunately have a hefty price.
Anyways, hope your family is safe dude.

How can they declare war?
{CC}StealthBlue, you are confused. No one is quite sure if the people in N Korea are just very fearful or totally brainwashed. They have the largest army in the world. You can't defeat them on their own territory if they don't surrender. Unless the US and Korea draft even more soldiers, which they might try.
And Japan won't join S Korea. Why would they? I doubt S Korea will even allow Japanese soldiers. Besides that the Japanese constitution also doesn't allow it, but that isn't much of a problem anymore nowadays. And if N Korea is fighting US& S Korea they run much less risk of getting nuked compared to right now.
And China is on the other side, remember? Sure, they will be forced to abandon N Korea in the fictional scenario of an attack. But fight against their ally? Why?
India is like as far away as the US is big. And Australia 3 times that distance.
There isn't going to be a new war. N Korea just wants it's attention. It will get it, back down, and then it will start over again in a year or 2. Plus they have nukes so they are totally safe. Even Saddam Hussain knew that. That's why he tried to make it look like he had WMDs. But the CIA knew he didn't so the US attacked anyway.

They're still technically at war because a peace treaty has never been signed

Japan doesn't have an outstanding military force anyway. Most of the South Koreans (that I've talked to about this anyway) feel that Kim Jong Il is on his death bed and is just trying to make the best of his last days in power. I don't think that many feel that it's a real threat. (Not sure if that's a good or bad thing).
Life is going by as it always has here - the nation is not really in a state of panic from what I see.
We also have all these US military bases all around the nation, if NK nukes SK, they will have the US in their face pretty quickly, I'd assume.

So some of you honestly think that if South Korea was attacked, nuked or not. Japan would not act, give me a break.
N. Korea as usual just wants attention and sure as hell won't launch a war.
|
I wouldn't be so worried about North Korea. Kim Jong is a dying man looking for a final shot at his fifteen minutes of fame. Besides, I would HIGHLY doubt any country would support North Korea's actions if they were to wage some sort of war.
If you live in America, here is the real threat you should be concerned about. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=99919934

North Korea vs South Korea, South Korea would lose. North Korea vs South Korea, US and Japan, North Korea will lose.

Even Saddam Hussain knew that. That's why he tried to make it look like he had WMDs. But the CIA knew he didn't so the US attacked anyway. Japan would go to Korea to fight North Korea if their constitution allowed for it (I read there are movements pushing to change the constitution just because of the situation in Korea).
The reason is simple...Japan and North Korea don't like each other at all. If North Korea were to invade SK, then Japan would respond simply to first off, help US military interests (Japan's foreign affairs = US foreign affairs), and second, to curb any potential aggression towards Japan itself. In any case, Japan won't be able to leave its own soil with any military force, except as a peacekeeping unit aligned with the UN, so they'll only fight in the diplomatic/political arena.
No one expects China to join in the fighting. North Korea's military, despite its size, is vastly inferior to those of the other major powers.
Like I said before, no one expects North Korea to win a war with the international community.
