I own a pair of Sony in-ear earphones that I bought like...a year and a half or two years ago for like $35. They're the little pieces of shit with silicone buds that you stick in your ear. They're great for noise canceling, and mine had decent sound quality...actually pretty bad, but they got the job done, more or less. Better than the stock earbud pieces of shit my iPod came with.

Anyway, today, I came back up to my apartment listening to music with them. When I got in, I wanted to finish listening to the song, so I changed while still listening. As I was taking off my jeans, the cord got stuck on my belt and yanked the earphones out of my ears.

The silicone buds on BOTH earphones went flying off in different directions. I found one of them after about five minutes of searching, but a good ten minutes straight of searching has yet to make the other one turn up.

Replacements cost $6+shipping/handling. The only spares I have left are the large size which simply don't fit in my ears.

So...I want to get a new set of earphones...preferably ones that aren't in-ear, or at least don't have removable silicone buds on them.

I've been searching around, but I have no fucking clue where to start. I don't want a big pair of DJ style headphones or anything like that...I don't want to look like an indie douche walking around, after all.

All the Newegg reviews have been saying that either they're pieces of shit, or the item costs $60 or something ungodly.

So...any recommendations? I'd prefer something under $20, but it doesn't look like that's going to be plausible if I want any semblance of sturdiness and sound quality in them...

EDIT
Oh my god...I got up to get my cell phone from my shelf, and bumped into my bed. Some stuff came tumbling off, and I stepped on something squishy. It was the other silicone ear bud thing. I hate this fucking earphone set.

Still give me suggestions, though. I'm thinking about getting a new set just so I don't have to worry about losing the silicone buds all the goddamn time.

those little multi-colored JVC earphones that everybody seems to be wearing nowadays have been pretty sturdy with decent sound quality, but they're in-ear so i don't know if you want them

Do their ear bud part things detach or stay on?

they stay on

there's a little plastic cover you could peel off with a knife or something if you really wanted to or something, but there's nothing detachable

I don't know what Sony's you have, but my guess is nothing under $20 is going to come close to matching their sound quality, especially those JVC things. Pretty much all good earbuds are like that. Your other option is to buy foam tips which might stay on better, but you won't really know if you like the sound until you try it.

Actually, those cheap JVC earbuds (JVC HA-FX33, aka Marshmallows) are known to be really really good for the price. Check those out. You do have to mod them to get the most out of them though, but it's a pretty simple 5-minute mod that anyone can do.

edit:

The foam tips can detach, but not easily. You get two extra tips in the pack, too.

Best place to find what you want. Read up here and you'll end up with a better set of headphones for a better price than you probably would have thought possible.

i think i have your shitty sony earbuds too. My solution was to super glue the rims of the buds. So far i've been pretty rough with mine and they still haven't came off yet.

But yeah i'm eager to hear some recommendations of earphones too

Do the Kramer mod on the Koss KSC-75. It's very easy to do and it transforms a $10 set of phones to almost $50 grado level:

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/kramer-mod-ksc75-124243/

BTW, for serious audio discussions, head-fi is one of the best places to look.

Get the AL UHP336
http://www.amazon.com/Altec-Lansing-UHP336-Snugfit-Earphone/dp/B000Q7IA5E
It's a rebranded Ultimate Ears Super Fi 3 Studio. It retails for $130 but it's selling for $40 at amazon.
Because this earphones uses armature drivers instead of dynamic drivers that is used in cheaper earphones, the sound in these earphones will sound much more accurate and clear.

+1 for KSC-75, those are pretty good earphones even without the mod, although they look a bit dorky

The most popular headphones here... are Creative EP-630 I think, never tried them though.

These are all highly recommended by the members over at head-fi.org. They have great reviews on Amazon and are supposedly really good bang-for-buck purchases.

Over the ear:
Sennheiser PX100 ($37.95 as of posting)

Koss PortaPro ($39.19)

Koss KSC75 ($14.36)

In-ear:
Yuin PK3 ($39)

lol, I don't even get why people have bothered rating this blog...

Anyway, I have a good set of over the ear DJ style headphones I use at home, but like I said in the OP, I don't want to walk around looking like an indie douche, nor do I want to get run over by a car (the noise canceling is too much on those. Good for plane rides, not for walking to and from campus).

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I'll look into them in detail once I get back from class.

EDIT
Oh, and that headphone.com website is a goldmine, thanks.
