I was kinda bored the other day and I thought about the futuristic suit used by Tony Stark. The idea came from a book called Starship troopers where people no longer used vehicles or tanks (the creators of Iron man even mentioned this). What really is bugging me is, is it actually possible with present technology to develop this kind of suit? Is it possible we might actually develop suits like this in the future?

Could someone actually develop some kind of suit like this by themselves? Anyone knowledgeable about this kind of stuff fill me in on this?

I don't think this is possible any time too soon. Japan has developed suits with some functions such as basic movement, lifting capabilities, or some jumping.

but we are a long ways away from developing something that could fly / be armored. I would imagine it would get too hot to survive in.

When watching Iron Man I kept saying to myself "shouldn't these bullets and shit be knocking him over"?

Yes.

I design robotic suits in my spare time. You'd be interested to know I am an English student. So my spare time is immense. Hence the robotic suits.

The first consideration to be made is what nemesis will you do battle with? Robotic suits are good and fine but if you have no awesome intent for it the idea is a wash. Peacekeeping? That is stupid. Nah we need something hot and sexy.. something that will eventually be turned into a movie and made famous. How about a robotic suit that does combat with space/mutant/magical villains? Great.

After I have picked a purpose for the robotic suit I then need to find the inevitable resources for the suit:

1. old wizened former military scientist who happened to specialize in robotic suit making or some metal or weapon.

2. special metals that came from an asteroid or were exclusively designed by your company/your father's company.

3. Semi-comical excuse to decorate/color the suit a certain way.

4. A series of convenient circumstances that make the suit both semi-feasible (you are rich, you know someone rich, they are military/you are military, someone died etc) and believable in a science fiction kind of way.

Once I have secured these elements I build it in my garage.

Those were just examples though.

My situation is a little less dramatic. My father owns a black ops military organization called "The Steel Fist of God." He was designing an experimental suit that would allow 1 soldier to become the perfect warrior, capable of defeating an entire nation with his own cold, steel hands of destruction. Well his right hand man named Alexander Chase Maximus got jealous and murdered my father while he was up late at night during a rainstorm designing the suit. I was away at college (Harvard) pursuing a degree in astro physics and nuclear engineering. When I returned and found my murdered father and the suit missing I knew there really was only one thing I could do.

Build my own suit.

So I tracked down my father's leading scientist, an old man with balding white hair named Walter Klopenheimer. Together we were able to build the suit in my dad's old (secret) laboratory through the use of montage and vague suggestions of time passage we did this in what seemed like a relatively quick period of time. After melding the experimental asteroid metal with the doctor's zany theory of lazer theory we made a robotic suit capable of cutting through the strongest of metals. We called it "The Red Death." For dramatic purposes I married the doctor's beautiful german model daughter and made love to her shortly before my final showdown with the "Steel Fist of God" suit. Needless to say LA was destroyed but the girl was saved (oh she was captured btw) and I was able to stop the suit from doing ambiguous misdeeds of villainy related (plausibly) to middle eastern conflicts and money.

Anyways, I hope I answered your question.

I saw two different suits on tv.
The first one was heavily armored to resist bear punches to get close to bears. it worked, only downside was that the wearer was as fast as a sloth. The second suit was a exoskeleton which basically made you stronger and faster but one hit would probably destroy all the circuits in it -.-
Jetpacks also already exist but they are hard to control and can only be used for a very short time.
Now combine those 3 things and you got your ironman suit
I'm sure it's gonna happen some day but probably only prototypes.

These already exist, although they're not full suits but rather exoskeletons. Still, the more advanced ones respond to minute changes in the muscles to mimic the intent of the body but with far more strength than the body is normally capable of. So far they've only given them basic abilities like heavy lifting because stuff like balance is seriously hard to give to a robot.

Well duh. If Tony Stark, a fictional character based on a comic book, can create a suit out of scrap metal in a cave while under surveillance and later perfecting his suit with his billion dollar fortune, we'll all be flying around in our Iron Man suits by the year 2010. After all, Barack Obama did promise change and a better future, one in which we can all blow shit up with highly advanced technology.

The US military has a strength augmentation suit thing...it's more of an exoskeleton than a "suit" as you would imagine it. It's like a frame that has the same joints as you do and will reinforce your own strength as you operate it.

However...this has zero combat implications. It's used for logistical purposes...loading/unloading cargo, transporting supplies, etc.

We have siege tanks too. And something like marines (if you assume that we arn't giving our soldiers stim packs, or we're talking about marines w/out stim).

edit: and inc in a mechanical suit vs batman? sick.

The first consideration to be made is what nemesis will you do battle with?

HIlarious; I have a feeling this will become one of those frequently quoted phrases like

Random Poster: OK so what map will they play on?
Random Poster 2: The first consideration to be made is what nemesis will he do battle with?

Anyway, in a slightly more serious note, the actual problem in designing this type of suit is the energy issue--arc reactors don't exist and the best we have today is a huge tank of gas. Then comes the issue of how you build a small rocket on a suit.
The beatings will continue until the morale improves.

There's also the big question of...why.

Your soldiers are going to become huge walking bullet magnets with a fraction of the mobility a simple armored soldier would have. In addition, designing weapons into a powered suit of some kind would also increase the weight, as well as its size. That requires even MORE power.

Maybe some kind of a powered suit could, if they were able to armor it properly, could be used as support for footsoldiers, kind of like vehicles work today, but the technology is very far off.

Why? To improve military efficiency, not even necessarily on the front line. I've seen some videos of some exoskeletons that look like the user is very mobile. Yes, adding weapons would add weight, no more than the soldier would usually be carrying though.

One drawback you mentioned is the power required for these things, that's the only serious limiting factor right now as far as I can see. The rest of the technology seems to be in place.
