I got a call at 6 in the morning from one of my best friends. We're from California. She has a good friend who now lives in Ohio that she's kept in touch with by phone and through some webcam site called stickam or something.

Anyway, apparently a mutual friend was chatting with him on that website, then saw him pass out (he was probably drunk) on cam. That person then saw smoke filling the screen, then the webcam cut out. That person didn't have any of his contact info outside of the website, so contacted my friend, who then contacted me, whilst freaking out (woke me up too...T_T).

So...for the last hour, we've been scouring the internet for a way to contact his relatives (he has parents, a sister and a brother). The amount of information I was able to pull up just from google searches, then searching directories and whatnot through the internet is fucking scary.

I don't know this guy personally...I've only heard about him through my friend.

Just based off of the guy's address, name, and first names of his family, I now know the ages of all of his family members, what high schools and colleges they went to, the city they live in, the street address of their home, and based off of their myspace pages I was able to pull up, I even know the brother's major and some of the hobbies and interests that the dad and brother have.

What...the...fuck. I totally feel like I've crossed every privacy/anonymity line possible while being a separate state from them.

I'm sure the police would have gotten to contacting them eventually (a call to the local police told us that the fire department was handling the situation), but my friend was very worried...and so we tried to contact them ourselves. She's talked to the brother before, so it's not all bad, I guess.

But god...the internet is fucking scary.

It's their own fault. The internet is only as scary as you make it, and only knows as much about you as you allow it to.

Me being able to find out anything about people versus people can't find out stuff about me..

A hard choice honestly I would probably choose the first.

Never mind Web 3.0: The next stage in technological evolution is a single worldwide computer. Collectively, we are already assembling this megacomputer from our billions of Net-connected PCs, cell phones, PDAs, and the like. As an increasing number and variety of devices are lashed to one another via the Internet and other communication systems, they form the components of what we might call the One Machine.

The internet is scared of Google.

Anyways yea I don't have no myspace/facebook just for the fact I don't want nothing to be pulled up under my name. And wtf this One Machine might be sponsered by google before we know it.

Holy fucking shit...it's already on the news, and the guy is in the hospital...this...could be bad.

http://www.local12.com/news/local/story/Man-Trapped-in-Clifton-Heights-Fire/-fg4zW6iR0urqpmAMMoHZA.cspx

Ok, that article sounds more optimistic.

The internet is truly fucked.

So I'm on the phone with my friend right now. We're waiting for the news to update. During a lull, she says to me, "'PH', I am so glad you're a computer geek."

This is why I don't use social networking sites, and go out of my way to google myself every once in a while to make sure nothing is up there that can ID me.

Yeah, I just went around googling my name. My name is so fucking common...there's even a Korean Catholic cardinal by my name. There's also a lawyer, an anesthesiologist, shit, even like people in my own city that share my name. lol.

This is fun. I need sleep.

Same. When people google my name all they find is some french sculptor, and if they google my nickname they just find out that I registered on the daemon tools forums about 8 months ago, on which I have 0 posts on.

I bet that an IP wouldn't help much if he's in a huge building, and you usually would need to ask the ISP to figure out where the actually address is that's linked to the ip.

I hope it all worked out.

Hahaha. This is not entirely true. My mom grandma girlfriend police my job or anyone else can post all they like about me.Besides it's really not that hard to break into a minimally secured database and get information(take a random website for example.) But Yeah the OP is right. I tried to find all the info on myself once and I got My name address(scary enough) phone number email age old school and what i was doing a few years ago on a weekend.(Freak email that someone posted.)
Whatever happens, happens.

No, it's not that simple. I only got superficial info (like interests and hobbies) from their myspace pages. The other info (age, address, school info, etc) I got off of online white pages and other random online databases. A lot of them were rather obscure, and they obviously got the info from already public records. Online background-check websites also have this kind of information.

I have no idea how those ppl get this kind of information.

Didn't have time to type this before, but I've gotta say being a teacher sucks in this day and age with student stalkers. Hell, I've heard of teachers getting fired for fabricated online identies lol. Luckily I'm computer savvy enough I wouldn't be likely to fall into that kind of trap, but still.

Wow, that's horrible. It completely contradicts the notion of free speech. Imagine getting fired simply for "fabricating online identies" on TL, that would be total BS.

He's fine, I think. They made more of a fuss about a minor injury to one of the firefighters than to the condition of the patient, so I'm guessing nothing worse than minor smoke inhalation and minor burns and whatnot.

We managed to get in touch with his brother by calling his university and asking them to contact him for us. They called back and said he got the message and that he and his parents were on the way to the hospital.

Apparently the fire (which started from him passing out while smoking a cigarette...) caused around $50,000 in damages.

Dumb ass mother fucker.

No I mean students made up fake identities that were inappropriate for a teacher and the community thought that they were the teacher's actual online accounts etc...
