So I just recently bought the Orange Box since it was on sale on Steam for $9.99. I was playing through HL2 for the first time.
It was fine and all...it's a decently fun game and all...until I got to the part where you have to drive around that boat thing in the canals. It was the first time I've ever gotten hit with motion sickness like this. I don't get it from being in planes, cars, trains, boats, whatever. I've been playing FPS games for years...I used to be a huge CS player, I was always a huge fan of the original HL games, and played all sorts of games from UT to C&C Renegade.
At first I thought it had to be the food I'd eaten...but as I was playing, it got worse and worse until I had to stop...I nearly vomited on my keyboard...like...lol.
How weird is that?

Were you using an uncomfortable headset (perhaps with active noise reduction?) or intra-aural earbuds? That's kind of strange, try opening the window :p

Nah, I was playing with speakers. Once I stopped playing, it got better. lol.

That happens now and then, dunno why, you were probably just not used to how the camera handled in that game. You know the note in almost every 3d game were it says that you should take a 30 min break every hour or something like that, it is to prevent stuff like this or they could be sued.

Motion sickness happens when you eyes/vision tells your mind that your body is moving, yet the rest of your body tells your mind you are stationary. Or vice-versa.
So in your case that boat part really tricked you visually, with your eyes saying you are moving about but your ass on your seat sending reflecting messages to your brain.
Your brain thinks you been posioned and tries to make your vomitt.

And yeah, the camera at the boat is the weirdest.

Afaik, its because of HL2's unusual wide visible angle. When you just look ahead you can see like 70 or something degrees of your surroundings, while in HL2 you see a much wider angle (or narrower? i forgot). I think it was Locked that had this too.

I bought the orange box too. Yea, I find I get worse the longer I play. I try to limit myself to a few hours at a time  Man, those games are really good too. (tangential rant: HL2 is awesome, it's great how you can pick up the story through talkign to random NPCs.)

Hm I never noticed that. Although that boat part is pretty intense so I guess I can believe it.
Would be amazing if someone had to buy Dramamine in order to experience hl2...

i got that when i played soccom 2 on the ps2 lol. it was so weird, my head started to hurt a lot and i just had to stop playing.
i would say just limit yourself to a few hours and take a break.

It didn't seem that much different, though I was playing on a 22" LCD. But again, I've played CS and TF2 with this thing and I've had no problems with it.

There are actually a lot of people who can't play FPSs due to motion sickness. I've known several. Most simply don't play.
Though I have a friend...her dad is a tech geek and gets all the latest games for his PS3 even though he can't play them. He actually takes Dramamine to play his games...fortunately for him, he's a doctor so...yeah.

I get motion sickness when I play the campaign mode of any of the Halo games, but I don't get it when I play the multiplayer. Odd...I also get it when I play GoW. Grr it sucks
