I think the hardest part about studying is getting started. I mean fuck, you have a test next week or a project thats due in two days, but u figure that youll get everything organized and procrastinate until the last night. Even then you'll say youll stay up all night procrastinating even more. I just got my report card today and it was an utter dissapointment. No, it wasn't because i slacked really bad or didn't try, but it was because i lost the motivation to study. Since i saw the college acceptance thread a couple weeks ago and found out that their are really smart people @ tl.net i just have a question. How do you get motivated to study? how do you stay focused and what are some good study tips and routines that you could possibly share.

p.s.
uninstalling starcraft is not an option

You just do it.
There is no real secret imho.
If the rewards are worth it to you jsut buck up and work. Some people like to go somewhere where they wono't be distracted like a library or something like that.

Tempbans don't really work if you lurk more than post, like I do. I've tried it before, utter failure.
My best advice to you is: just start. Don't plan anything, don't say "I'll start after i finish reading this thread", just go and open that problem set and get to work. If you're anything like me, you'll be focused for about five seconds. Then you glance at your computer, and say "hmm I wonder if there's anything new on TL/email/espn, etc". The only thing I've found to work is a complete hands-off policy. Don't touch the computer, literally. Just, don't. Not even for the most "noble" of reasons (this includes wiki'ing the topic you're studying or googling a process/answer. I swear those are the 2 biggest traps ever)

Given that the computer is my primary source of procrastination, this works for me. I don't watch TV or anything, but you can attempt same thing with remote, etc.

Speaking of which, I am going to study now. Feel free to laugh at me if you see me posting in the next little while.

oh yeah I just realized, might as well add before I start studying. Currently a lot of my material is on the computer, so it's a little impractical to adopt a hands-off policy. So I just take a handsoff policy with respect to either web browsers, or tabs, etc. anyway off I go
(\o/)  If you want it, you find a way. Otherwise you find excuses. No exceptions.

Turn off the computer. The web, IM, and of course SC, are too huge a distraction, if you're anything like me. Personally, I don't (and can't) really study in the conventional sense of the word. I like to listen in class, make my own notes, and then generally cram before exams. On the day of a paper (say it's at 8.30am) I usually wakeup at 2am, and read through my notes until it's time. Come home, sleep, rinse, repeat. So far, this has worked great for me. I went through undergrad with a great batting average. Of course, this is going to work less and less as I look at grad school, and have to write more papers, and sit less examinations.

Writing papers, of course, is a joy for me. I love writing, and academic writing in particular really makes me go. I usually start by reading the material I'll be citing, and then just try and draw up my research question and the thrust of my argument before actually starting writing. When I have the skeleton of the paper down, I usually just sit down and do one writing marathon, getting down 5000+ words (depending on the length of the paper - this is usually half the required amount for most of my work) in a single session if possible. Once the majority of the content is down, it's edit, edit, edit, and for this I sometimes take days, even weeks. Needless to say, for papers, I usually start way, way before the deadline.

Either way, it's up to you to find a style that works for you. Glhf studying!

Okay I have to disagree with you on the planning. Not having a good planning is a huge factor in procrastination imo. What helped me out a lot is instead of saying "I will write/study X tomorrow" (where X is usually a huge amount), I started making really concrete plans like when I had to read 600 pages aka 20 chapters in 6 weeks, I just read a chapter spread over those days and I specified which chapter I was going to read on which day. There's a reason we have a prefrontal lobe in our heads, (ab)use it. Note how this thing does not fully develop until age 20, so maturation probably plays a part in this whole thing as well. For some reason I could not motivate myself no matter what I did at age 17 and now Im 20 and study really hard each day.

I do agree on the computer issue though, if you're studying close your laptop or turn off your computer asap. Going to the library might help out too, should be worth a try. If anything don't ask for some ban because you can still mindlessly browse and it's not gonna solve anything, nor is it the root of your problem, you need to stop the distraction. Try to map out your long and short term ambitions, take some time to think about what you want to achieve, again this may just come with age but thinking about this stuff can't hurt.

Also, about procrastination: it is mostly a short term strategy your body performs to get satisfaction even if it is damaging in the long run. A more steady routine of fun/studying might just help. In any case, try to enjoy the good things in your life and don't get mixed up in dumb trivial problems noone cares about like notorious forum idiot monkeyspanker/rebirthoflegend or whatever he calls himself nowadays.

there's probably more good tips but its like 3 am and I gotta get up at 8 good luck with this

I have a similar problem. For me, making a very tight schedule in general has always helped. Keeping everything tight and filling up free time with appointments/working out ensured that I had to use the time left in the best way. If I feel lazy/unmotivated, I either think of the consequences of me not studying or the rewards of me doing so. I guess you'll have to find out for yourself in the end.

Getting much less than ~8 hours of sleep before an exam can be as damaging as not studying about 25% of the required material (i.e: often it can be more rewarding to get a good sleep than pulling an all-nighter).

Also weed messes with your memory, don't smoke a lot of it (not sure how much a lot is though lol) near the weeks you're supposed to study.

I have never studied in my life. I get solid Bs for the most part and haven't failed anything since high school (when I fucked around) I just listen in class, retain knowledge, and sometimes look things over briefly just before a test. I could probably do better if I studied, I just can't do it though, it's just against my nature.

Some people are just naturally more gifted at attaining and retaining knowledge, others have to work harder.

I would say pay attention in class and review every day because it's easier to learn over a longer period of time, and you'll probably retain it for longer periods of time (as opposed to cramming). Of course, it's a little too late for that.

To study, I agree with Fritz, a game plan is very important, at least for me. I decide what I'm going to study and how much before I head off to do it so I set goals for the day and have a quantitative means of accessing my study progress (this may or may not correlate to how much material I learn/understand/memorize). Distractions kill me. With a computer I can get at most 1 or 2 hours of studying before I get distracted (it's usually much, much less). Last term I began going to a secluded computer lab in school (sounds counter-intuitive, but I don't actually sit in front of a computer). This way I can study almost all day (minus bathroom/meal breaks).

It's also great to have motivations or larger goals, but these are individual. I have a drive to:
- Do well academically so I can look better for co-op interviews, and in the future eventually go to grad school.
- Learn the material, (it's my major, I hope I find it interesting!).
- Beat my classmates =P. I don't care if anyone knows how well I do, I want to do well for my own sake.

Your motivations may vary, but good goals do help!
Soli Deo gloria.

You can't really help it, everyone burns out, some just take longer. But you can always try. A good work environment is vital, although not always possible. Stay away from the computer, music off or with no lyrics and low volume, take breaks every half hour to stretch/eat/drink.

I'm probably what you'd call a good student, top grades, always doing work by the deadline, best uni in the country etc. But I'm not doing anything extraordinary, I do my work the day before the deadline, I never review material until exam time arrives, I don't go out of my way to do extra work. But I pay attention in at least half of my classes and always do every bit of homework.

Some might call it underachieving, but I just want to live my life in a relaxed way.
No I'm never serious.

The hardest part is when you know that you don't have to study. If you know that you have to study then you will do it, so just make sure that you know that you will have to study and everything will be fine.

Either wait till your going to fail if you dont start RIGHT now.

or freak yourself out till you feel that your gonna fail if you dont start RIGHT now.

Honestly, theres not a whole lot you can do but gather the willpower to do it.

Eh, depends on motivation for me. If I really want a good mark/I need a good mark for some reason I will study a lot and just jump right into it. However, when I don't care about the material/my grades/I don't feel the need to do incredibly well, I usually do it last moment when the pressure is really on. Like right now I am finishing up a novel for English, and the final is in....11 and a half hours. 9 painful pages left, so fucking boring.
