Space Marines.....good stats, 3+ armour by default, pretty forgiving race tbh
|
I used to play it all maybe 10 years ago. Warhammer Fantasy (as orks originally, then skaven, then chaos) and 40k (Blood Angels originally, then later Eldar), Bloodbowl (Wood elves originally, then Chaos, then Humans), Necromunda (Gang Esher), Warhammer Quest, as well as a little Mordheim (skaven) and Gorkamorka (uh, orks I suppose. were there anything else?). I also had a few test games of Epic and Space Hulk, but they never really appealed to me all that much. I quit it some ten years ago though.
This easter, I was visiting my family cabin in the countryside, and, having nothing to do there since there's no power, few people and the weather was pretty shitty, I dug into my old mags and comics I had laying about. In the pile, I found some old White Dwarf magazines, (which are Games Workshop hobby mags if you were unaware) which brought on lots of nostalgia from back when I used to play it.
When I got back, I made a few calls, and sure enough, the game club thing that we had going back those 10-15 years ago was still going strong with a lot of the same members. I'll be taking a trip to meet up with them tomorrow probably, to see how the state of things are, and how stuff has evolved.
Anyhow, yea. About the topic.
After I got back, I picked up the Fantasy Core rulebook plus a Vampire Counts army book and a basic regiment of skeleton warriors at the local imports, fantasy, gaming and nerd stash-shop. Been cutting and gluing them together the last couple days, and I'm really looking forward trying my hand at painting again. I'm not really back into the entire thing like I was way back when, but depending on wether or not I get back in touch with the old gaming gang and my enthusiasm lasts, I imagine I'll be spending a lot less time in front of the screen, screwing my eyes over on something else than porn.

The only reason why Space Marines are the "newbie" race is that they are GW's main race. I'm pretty sure beginners actually fare better with Necrons than with Space Marines. While it may be true that Space Marines are well armoured and have high toughness, this all does not mean a thing when you see what arsenal of weapons other races have. Also, Necrons share all of the Space Marine's strengths and even more (especially with their regeneration ability) plus their firepower is even more devastating.

onnings thats really cool man...so vampire counts is your race of choice? also do u play at a GW shop? or how did u meet that gaming group?
Frozen...do u mainly just paint/convert stuff? or do u play alot as well?

I use to play 40K, collected some high elves for fantasy but they were kinda pansy and I didn't like the universe as much. I have a bunch of dark eldar, space marines and tyranids. Mostly tyranids, but most of my friends played fantasy so I didn't really play much, I guess I was mostly collecting and painting.

Yea, I picked up vampire counts on impulse, not really knowing much about overall game balance and stuff. While i'm not too much fan of vampires in general due to all the dreadful teen-girl appeal it has, the tons of shambling, rotting zombies and other fun stuff more than balances it out. =p
back when I played originally, yea, we either played at the shop, or at any of our places if we had the space and time. it was easiest with the more basic board games such as bloodbowl and warhammer quest, since it takes less space, but as long as you have access to a decent dinner table, doing tabletop strategy works fine as well. and if that's too small, just buy some 2 feet by 4 feet wooden boards - a four by four board should be enough for small battles, but you'd might want 6 by 4 or 8 by 4 for full-sized games. anyhow, they're easy to store, and works great as a basic gaming surface.

Ya the part kinda sucks...all that twilight...girly crap...i like the dead rotting stuff also...well since i dont have any friends that play...i still havent decided on fantasy or 40k...and its been so long since i have played either...i will be a complete newbie again...and will have to learn all the rules...i know about the arcs and line of sight difference from the 2 games...and how fantasy u cant really move and shoot...and movement is different amoung the races in fantasy...unlike 40 k....
im kinda leaning towards fantasy and lizardmen...cuz if i end up not playing...they would be what i want to paint/collect......
grrrr i cant decide fantasy or 40k
edit: plz someone that lives less than 30 min away from San Jose cali and plays...find this thread

Go with 40K

Onnings, you picked well, in the current release vampire counts are amazingly over the top. basically THE best army. Daemons give them some compotition (same with DE's) but vamps are just fucking unreal with all their toys.

let me guess what race u play XDXDXD
INc doesn't play ( probably) Nids are simply what the Zerg were based off of, so no nids = no zerg and no zerg = no iNc
and by gay in my previous post i meant cheesy.
eldar were abusive but they used to have a problem dealing with chaos ^ ^
Did they really nerf melee? because if they did... lets just say its' a good thing i don't play anymore

This thread makes me want to start WH over again really bad, but I don't know yet where to take the time from. This is mainly because I use like 4+ hours or more to paint a single miniature. I might post some pictures of my Ultramarines once I get hold of my brother's digicam. Post yours too, I'm curious about your painting skills

Anyhow, I'll continue my cutting and gluing today, then probably start off some painting tomorrow. I'll try to post some pics of my fledgeling tries over the weekend, if I have the time for it. Don't expect much. =p

I'm going to try to paint by the squad now though, doing ten skeletons in stages before going on to higher levels of detailing. Hopefully, it'll let me get an army painted up with a decent standard, instead of just a ton of finished heroes, half-painted squads, and the rest covered in undercoat. Guess we'll see how it turns out soon enough.

i used to play this back in high school.
i had a black templar marine army (this was when the monthly mag released rules for them to make them 'official') and bretonian army in fantasy.
i spend ages painting shits and went to my local shop to do battle with other geeks.
entered one local tournament, went 8 - 0 then got ass kicked by blood angel and tyrannid armies.
the next morning, i woke up and thought to myself, wtf is this asian guy doing spending his KFC slaving money on little minitures and go to places where fat white dudes talk to eachother about codex and shits?
i was down a few grands at least getting every freaking set of space marines in order to compete. I realise that gamesworkshop is fucking douche and is just outthere to make money on 14 year olds geeks.
Then i found starcraft.
the end.

You tell me about it. I've got around 15'000 points worth of WH40K armies in my basement + around 4'000 points worth of WH Fantasy. I don't know how many grands I spent on that, but it's a horrendous amount for sure. However, most of it is unpainted, so maybe I should get off my lazy butt and sell some of the miniatures I don't need anymore..

never played warhammer or any of those, but ive played loads of mordheim, played like 40 hours of it during easter with two friends :D we've altered the rules like a million times and every time there's disagreement we just throw dice, really laid back and chilled out kind of playing, but man it's so much fun. =)
|
Yeah, Mortheim and Necromunda are really nice to play as well. Actually, I think I'm going to invite a friend of mine for some Necromunda this WE. Anyone playing Gothic?
|
mordheim is fucking god like, spent so many hours playing that with friends. Imagine a bunch of 14 year olds (8 of em) playing mordheim from 6pm to 6 am. Man those were the days!
I've played battle fleet gothic before, its fucking unreal but a problem is the player base TT so small
