I was watching an episode of South Park where Cartman freezes himself, and is stuck in a continuous time loop.

So I'm curious, if it were free, would you be willing to try it (after you're dead of course)?

Poll: Would you be willing to take an offer of free cryonic freezing?
(Vote): Yes
(Vote): No

Edit: To those who don't know, cryonic freezing is a process where "doctors" freeze your body immediately after death to prevent neurons from decaying. Many times, only the head is preserved. The theory is that in the future they will be able to bring you back to life with new technologies.

Freezing techniques weren't developed quite as well back in the day. Many of his neurons are likely damaged (even if he did freeze himself). Plus, its a myth that he was cryonically frozen.

Sure, that would be pretty awesome if it worked, and if not, then you are still dead any it's not any different than having been buried. Unless you believe that time loop thing Cartman went through would actually happen.

After i died? Whats the point lol.

Oh right, in the event that we somehow learn how to resurrect people before we blow the planet up. Probably wouldnt do it though.

Walt Disney was never actually frozen.

People do this because often to most people, the definition of "dead" is your heart stopping. Cryonic freezing is supposed to keep your brain cells intact in hopes that in the future, you can be revived with an artificial body or something similar.

Is the idea not also that if your going to die in 3 months from cancer you can freeze yourself and wait for a cure?

No, I don't want to be brought back to life to live in a world that I no longer recognize, with no more friends and family still alive.

Supposing you die of old age, if you are brought back to life, won't you have the same problems as you did back then, and just die again shortly after?

Cryonic freezing is for rich guys who can't spend all their money in one lifetime.
No dough, no go. And no mercy.

might as well wait until you're clinically dead from cancer as opposed to preemptive freezing - the entire point is to somehow make your brain viable and restore 'you' in the future.

i don't see how anyone can vote no unless for strong personal moral or ethical reasons. practically speaking you'd have absolutely nothing to lose and a chance to see what the future is like. imagine talking to old friends about how depraved the new society is after you both have died, it'd be like the technological equivalent of heaven.

Haha you do realize most people who die of cancer have a horrible, painful last few months..

ah ok that's right i didn't consider that =[

edit: the technology is still hypothetical though, so a few really shitty last few months may be better than taking such a gamble? who knows

My reasons to say 'no':
1) You are religious and believe you will go to heaven (or hell...) after death
2) You believe death is natural, a part of life, and you want to return to nature
3) You'd rather be dead than wake up in a 'brave new world' without friends and family

M reasons to say 'yes':
1) You're pragmatic - 0.00001% chance is better than nothing!
2) You fear death a great deal and want to take any chance to live longer
3) You want to see the future

Personally, I'm going with 'yes'

i think i would be really confused if technology grew enough to bring me bak

also if i died of old age then i would not want to be brought bak cus my brain would still have loss in function due to aging... sooo not really no

EDIT: i have no fear of death... if u die, u die... so wat?

though technology may evolve to such a point, what is the point of bringing anyone back?

why would i revive random people, hmm no thank you the world is hard enough with the backward views of it's present inhabitants, imagine the backward views of someone in 1002.

unless of course you are a genius of some sort, or contribute a great deal to society, or in the future your family becomes obscenely rich and had you to thank for it.

but i still said yes

No because when people are killed they die.
And life loses meaning and significance if you can just bring yourself back to live in the future.

Most people that say "yes" are too young to say, really. Try living a full life of seeing all your best friends and brothers/sisters/parents/grandparents pass away before making that decision.

Why would the people of the future want to spend the effort to revive you and make you productive to society?

Ok.. so, TeamLiquid cyborg army that creates a Starcraft cult 1000 years in future after being resurrected. What's not to like?

Seriously though, might as well take the freezing, unless I am already bored with life.
I have heard some old people feel like they have seen and experienced so much that they just want to rest and take their remaining time easy, not minding to die, so if I was at that point... I probably wouldn't take it.

I dont think I would do it.
Dont get me wrong, I'd love to see the future and right now the thought of dying really doesnt appeal to me.
But seeing as how cryonic freezing can happen only after you're legally dead, I'd probably be quite old already and I can imagine wanting to just rest in peace then.

(Unless its proven by then that they can make you young again in the future!)
