ISP shut down my internet for © infringement

I lost my internet connection this morning. A few hours later I got around to calling my ISP for tech support and the tech support guy told me my connection was "deactivated by the securities department" and he gave me a number and ref. number to call. They said my connection was deactivated because of copyright infringement for Frost/Nixon. They said I had to stop sharing it for them to turn it back on. I deleted it from my torrent and they turned my internet back on. Anyone ever hear anything like this happening? I use Vuze for torrents and COX is my ISP.

Don't download from public torrent trackers in the future unless you have another way of staying safe. :p

Yep, I'm with Cox too. About a year back, I was downloading an episode of The Wire, that had just been leaked. Within a few hours, my internet was shut down. Didn't have to call them to reconnect it, but I did have to delete the file. So, I did that.

A few months after that, I was downloading and episode of Friday Night Lights I had missed. I was paranoid, because my internet was shut off right as I was browsing the NBC website, watching another episode.

I had to call Cox that time, and they guy talked to me and was like "I just have to tell you that we have a three strike rule. If we have to stop your service again, your account will be up for review, and we'll decide if we want to keep you as a customer."

I've been really careful with my downloading since then. My best guess is that the owners of popular content are tracking IPs via torrents, and then informing the ISPs. But I have no idea how it works.

Your lucky you werent sued or anything. For this to happen whatever company that owns the rights to frost/nixon probably would have had to contact your isp and it sounds like your isp saved your ass by just turning your connection off and not giving them your name/address.

you should learn to use peerguardian i your sticking with torrents

Also, what trackers are public and what ones are private?

they are private because not many people know of them, and usually require invites.

I had my internet cut off for about a week or so.
Most excruciating experience ever.

I only use private trackers now, can't trust public at all.

I read yesterday that AT&T (my ISP) will also be doing this. I wonder if Demonoid is fine to use?

New Zealand almost went that way, with a law proposed to mandate that ISPs cut off access for customers accused of violations. Last I heard the proposal died, but it will be back.

Seriously though, torrents (especially public ones) are just asking for it. Anyone can join the tracker and see who else is on it.

In my case, I checked my ISP's help page for the details of their news server.

Of course that doesn't work for everyone, as some ISPs don't carry usenet, or block the alt. hierarchy.

Even if you use peer guardian, you're gonna get caught if you use a public tracker like the pirate bay..
But if you use all private trackers, you'll probably never get caught.. so thats my suggestion. look for good private torrent sites

This is true. It may help to some degree, however peerguardian can only block ips that are known to belong to copyright enforcing agencies and I assure you there are more IPs where those came from. That being said, it certainly couldn't hurt in the future.

Really all they have to use is a modified torrent client which just grabs the IPs of everyone seeding and leaching off of the torrent. You can even do the same yourself by checking the IP addresses of the people you are connected to on the torrent.

This problem is of course bypassed with private torrent sites, however those are difficult to get into and I'm not even talking about the really private ones, even the less private places like demonoid can be hard enough if you don't know somebody.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the important thing is that if you can get into a private tracker, so can a copyright agency, so a less private one may not really protect you like you want it to.

Actually this happens in Poland as well, I wouldn't be surprised if this happens in multiple countries. When I lived in the US and had COX/Comcast/TimeWarner we ( roomates & I ) would have this happen as TimeWarner customers - usually I would go to a website and would have a form stating "Your account is in violation of downloading this & that, stop it, Do you agree Yes/No" And clicking Yes would unblock the account.

Yeah testing a 3rd strikes rule that's about it, At&t wont shut off service to you without a court order is their stance though i believe, But the have been scaring the shit out of ppl giving calls and sending emails that they know what you are doing.
http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/ATT-We-Wont-Boot-P2P-Users-101573

Cox is the only one currently enforcing the 3rd strikes thing i would change services or get a megaupload account or something...

This reminded me that in Sweden there's a new law being put to practice in two days that forces the internet-providers to release all information they have on a customer about copyright infringement. That is going to suck so hard because they wont stop at shutting down your internet, you might also go to court.

I was just wondering though if anybody knows, are the chances of getting caught lesser when downloading from a site like rapidshare? Because I see all this talk about bittorrents, but I don't really see anything about direct downloading. Rapidshare for example, has most shit you look for, so as long as you have an account, you can easily download most games, movies, etc, faster even then you would with some random public torrent.

the chances of getting caught go down to 0%

I dont think so. I've been downloading shit from a private tracker site for a long time, since im connected to the schools internet, and they've never said anything.
A friend of mine downloaded "Liar liar" from an open tracker and got busted.

My internet was never shut down but I did get a warning email from my ISP saying that any further use with torrent sites will result in my account being indefinitely frozen.

Scared the hell out of me because in my neighborhood there's only one provider. I would be stuck with dial-up if I got shut down. =[

There is a reason why ADSL is cheaper then SDSL download bandwidth is cheap upload is not.

I have AT&T and download from public trackers mostly. I've never received any notice or had my internet shut down. Although, sometimes when I download something with U-Torrent. My internet will be mildly sluggish after that for like an hour. I mostly download games, and music. I do get an occasional aXXo movie of isohunt.com, though. I'm not really into shows, and I mostly use Hulu for that anyway.

AT&T warnings have been to only those downloading movies currently AT&T is the largest isp in the US they really don't want to be dealing out warnings etc and cutting off internet, which they don't but they are planning to put up filters later... due to outside pressures. And only was being done for like 4 days now don't even know if they are going to keep it up etc.
