But I spoke to a friend of mine telling him how things had turned out for me and that things would only get tougher. Then he said "Tough times don't last. Tough men do."
Then it all made sense. It made sense to defend this country.

My understanding is that people should be proud of things they HAVE done (like I am a vet and I am damn proud and happy when a patient is getting better), not my things they have read about being done 50-100-1000-2000 years ago (like being proud cause of a battle where the bulgarian troops led by Tzar Simeon raped the Byzantium army at Anchialus in 917). Why be proud of that? Bottom line is shitload of people died there for the imperial interests of both countries... Or you, the Russians being proud of defeating the Nazis back in 1945... I can understand the actual soldiers thinking "Wow we raped the mightiest army in Europe, we rock" but a modern Russian boasting over it is pitiful. Or "Hey you know I am proud cause Tolstoi is one of the best writers in the world!". It does not matter nowadays what nationality he had, get over it already!

But how can you be proud of a bunch of people you don't even know of, and that just happen to be born inside your territory? I can also understand that you like your culture, and history, etc. But do you think countries go to war so as to protect their culture and history? The answer is no, millions of people die in wars with mainly other interests (economic, etc.) which have nothing to do with culture at all. Did I somehow contribute to their win? Am I superior to others because the people who beat the other people happened to be born closer to me? No. We all come from Earth. Imo the whole industry when it comes to World Cup is rather useless, the sport on other hand is kind of fun. I usually don't give a crap about soccer, but when sweden plays, I'm fucking pumped. It's MY TEAM is all. No the lines in the sand don't matter, but you are from the same country, they share most of your values and culture, they represent you. When I tell people I'm swedish in the US, they automatically think I'm awesome. Sweden is where the Shortsnout dragons come from, and that other creature Luna was talking about. Yes goddamnit, Sweden featured in fucking Harry Potter, I nearly came, not because I have anything to do with what my country is like or does or thinks, but simply because it's MY TEAM. Humans are pack animals, we care about our pack. If some other pack gets suicide bombed, we shrug and say "thats a shame," but if some of our herd does good in soccer you're damn right we're gonna show pride at being of the same herd as them. I may have lost my train of thought, but the tl;dr of it comes down to this: humans are teamplayers.

However un-patriotic I may call myself, the mention of Sweden in Harry Potter (several times!) made me all warm and proud. Soccer does'nt though, Honestly I think it's mostly because the reference toutches closer to your own person, but many times it may be because you feel some sort connection to your nation/culture/whatever. One thing though: Bulgaria got the coolest dragon, fuck!

It's not about nationalism or ignorant patriotism, it's about defending the men and women next to you; it's about fighting for a cause greater than yourself and knowing that what you're doing is having a positive effect on those you love. See this I understand, that's something I could really see myself fighting for. Myself, my friends, my family, things like that. But as mentioned in this thread before, things that people did a few hundred years back shouldn't and don't matter to me. I agree with you though, it should be about fighting for yourself and your family etc etc.

Most people don't contribute much to the main parts of the site PX, TLPD, TLFE, LR but we still contribute in small ways that make us feel as if we belong blogs, topics, posting and so that's similar to people in a country doing work or purchasing goods from that country. It's about pride. this blind nationalism is different thing altogether but this thread is full of really retarded posts.

I have been through the Officer Cadet Training Course in Singapore, only worse training would be from Commandos and other special Ops units. If you can take heart in that.. as for not going home, take it as saving money. When i went home everyday, transport cost a freaking BOMB. Its a short two years (or 1 year 10 months). ORD LORH!
