Today I watched the movie “Watchmen” with a few of my friends.
I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with the film. I really think Mr. Snyder captured the essence of the comic books by touching on the main themes on human nature, love, anti-heroes, and humanity’s future on this Earth. The entire idea of the alternative universe, a world with Nixon still in office and on the edge of a nuclear holocaust, is inherently appealing to me, a ‘what-if’ personality. Given that the book was written during the cold war, the subject matter is appropriate but even today I feel that the message delivered by 'Watchmen' is relevant.
To be honest, I was struck at times by how much this film goes against the conventional comic book –[SPOILERS AHEAD] the capturing of Rorschach when you expect the hero to escape, the erectile dysfunctions of Dan when you expect an epic love scene, the casual way Rorschach and the Night Owl just stroll into Ozymandius’ lair when you expect an intricate entry, and just the sheer amount of flaws inherent in each character, very unexpected for a genre where the good guys always triumph over the evil doers. The movie definitely brought these differences out into the foreground in a way that the graphic novel didn’t. I suppose it’s because I read the graphic novel without preconceptions but the setting of a cinema forced me to look at things from a more conventional viewpoint. This new perspective was a pleasant surprise on top of the expected storyline.
Even though I knew what was going to happen, the movie was great. It’s different to read dialogue and look at pictures than it is to actually see the events unfolding on screen. At times, even knowing what was going to happen, I was still repulsed and shocked by the sheer amount of violence depicted in the movie. I suppose this is to be expected as Mr. Snyder, director of ‘300’, has shown us in the past how he prefers these slow motion scenes of brutality. The dialogue was taken from the comics very accurately but still done realistically; the characters were very similar to those in the graphic novel; and the plot was essentially the same with a final variation that didn’t really change the point of the story. I must admit I did miss the pirate substory but at 2 hours 40 minutes, the movie was already quite long enough.
My friends did not seem to enjoy this movie and I understand their pain. It was definitely confusing at times and certain scenes could only be appreciated if one had read the graphic novel. Essentially, this movie is for the deep thinkers, those with a philosophical mind. It’s for people who wonder about our place in this universe and how far our human nature can take us in this world. It helps to have read the comics but it is also accessible for those with a naturally inquisitive mind, for those who like to think about abstract unaswerable questions. A popcorn film this most definitely is not.

If you could take any physical form (12-pack and huge, dangling penis) wouldn't you want to show it off? The only thing that's crazy is that he didn't make his dong any bigger - what I'd do is have it go a good 20 feet, and then use little clones of myself to carry it behind me like a wedding dress's trail.

It wasn't a very complex movie.

Because people that havent read the Gnovel just wont fully understand it all. I myself thought the movie was really well put together. I would of prefered the novel ending + Show Spoiler +who doesnt want to see the world come together to destory a huge squid? seriously? Either way this movie will be a love or hate movie. For those of you people who are hung over Dr. Manhattann huge wang get over it. This is not the first time you have seen a huge wang. He just prefers to not wear any close, and I can understand why.

To be frank... i hated Watchmen. I never read the comics, and was completely lost at times, especially near the end. For comic book movie as big as Watchmen to succeed, it has to at least break from the comic and show some creativity. For about the first hour or so, the movie had potential, it was almost comparable to The Dark Knight. But after that, the movie became a bore, it dragged on too long, was impossible to comprehend, and had violence and sex in random, unnecessary places. As for the "thinking" part of it, it is not nearly the genius of say, Citizen Kane. All of the philosophical lessons that the director tries to teach are shouted out at you, and thrust in your face. It tries to be smart, but just fails at it. I dont regret seeing it, but it could have been so much better.

lol, anyways the movie ending was much better. I finished the book and went to go see the movie that night. Some of the other stuff in the comic was good but really had no purpose in there (like the black freighter and the other side crap), yea it was there to add proper writing allusions and what not but it just dragged and filled pages. I'm glad that stuff had to be removed.
The movie is nearly 3 hours long and I can say that the whole time I never even noticed. This is the first time that has happened to me with any movie over 2:30:00. Entertaining from start to finish. Pretty great movie 7.5/10

The ending is really good, reminds me a lot of Sin City.
