I would do double what any one person is supposed to do and then tell my teacher I've already done double work and I'm frustrated that my group won't do anything. In fact, they have invited me to do everything on an all nigher! Sorry I just can't do that please don't penalize me!

IMO group-work should be assigned along with an option for a separate individual project because it's very unfair.

Probably. Our IB teacher is fucking retarded and doesn't tell us how he's going to grade anything. I got a B last semester for no reason at all. We had 2 graded assignments that I know of (both A), and I participated in the class a shitton.

No, sleep.

just have a one on one with the teacher about how you actually did your part. The teacher can't dock you point for someone else.
Sometimes its not intentional, sometimes you just botch it.

The teacher has every right to dock me points because there's no way for me to prove that I did it.

Well, yes he can, but thats out of his control.

I say get the sleep. You've done what you could reasonably be asked to do, and if you have other things tomorrow, there's no sense screwing those up.

wow i totally understand how you feel.
Back in grade 10 i think i was in a group of 5, had a science project to do about nuclear chemistry. Everytime we met up they joked around and fucking wasted time. The night it was due i was the only guy staying up til 4 a.m finishing everything while those fags were sleeping like its none of their business. Ugh...

Anyways, that's just life. High school is filled with ppl like that. Either they dont give a shit or .. they just dont give a shit. Hopefully you learn from this experience and next time pick more reliable ppl to work with.

Ah I hated group work when I was in school. You didnt learn anything and it was a huge waste of time and only became more and more popular with the teachers every year.
Had a teacher change for unknown reasons between semesters one year and my grade got cut in half do to just silly playing around shit from the new teacher. She knew I was top but I could in no way prove it and thus, lame grade.

Damn I should not look at school related threads.

We don't get to choose groups. The other part of the shit. My friends and I worked together very well and both of them were in IB (same period), and we all got sent into different groups.

Yeah, I think I'm going to sleep. Physics and French are more important to me than some stupid business class anyways.

Going to your teacher and whining about your group not getting anything done isn't going to make you look much better.

The best thing you can do, is just look as competant and put together as possible during the presentation. If someone makes a mistake, correct them without making it look like you are just calling them out. Make it obvious that the group was shitty.

Or

Or you know, just chalk it up as a loss, go to the all nighter, get the project done, and realize sometimes in school, business, life, you are put in a group where you are the one who has to get stuff done.

Or

If your part is done, tell your group that, and tell them you have to study/sleep and that they have all your complete work and can do what they want with it.

or some combination of the three. To me, going to the teacher and telling him how much harder you worked isn't going to make him, your group, or even yourself happy.

edit: have you even said anything about this to your group? I can't imagine many people straight up refusing to work after they have been called out.

You know what is worse? When your group members do the work...except they don't give a crap about it and just wing it.

For ex. You are in charge of doing notes for arms while other group members are assigned to do notes for other parts of the body. You do your part with diligence and have shitload of notes done while your partner "claims" they are done even though they did less than 1/10th of what you did. When you pressure them to do more, they bitch at you and go "well if you want it better, fix it yourself, because I did my part already".

That is why if the teacher allows you to pick your group members, you always pick the top students.

I think your hand is being forced here. You may have had a chance a week or so ago to talk to the teacher about splitting from the group, but you're pretty screwed now. If this is a big project don't let some lazy bastards drag your grade down with them.

If you're a senior, don't do it. Since college don't look at senior year grades. If you're a junior, you're gonna have to do it. Since grades count for college.

this tends to be a trend in business classes in college as well.

i've honestly never have had a problem doing a group project with any of my classmates in science classes, but i have friends in business courses that complain about this type of situation all the time.

this is high school right? not so serious stuff IMO

anyways my advice may not work out so well for you as I would just say fuck it, bite the bullet and take the hit in grade and make your group members eat their procrastination by not helping them and taking care of your own stuff first (studying for your tests and whatnot). But, again I have no idea what your situation is in your school (my HS was laughable and I was straight A when I could be bothered to give a crap about my class, so I could afford dropping a class in the first place). Then again, I'm quite a cynical person that would rather keep things fair than pick up some other's damn slack.

Pessimistic outlook: at least you learned you can't trust others

Groupwork with unmotivating group or lack of reward usually results in chaotic shit, though sometimes it can turn out to be hilarious.

I remember back in highschool we had good group that made the project 50% or so complete on a day or two without even wasting too much time...
but it lead all of us to think that rest would also be as easy -> nothing gets done -> the same morning we had to introduce it we all went and googled our asses off, gathered all important looking things related to subject and I rearranged it in MSWord to look more like selfproduced text. After that it was sent to next guy to add some pictures to make it less plain looking and so on.

In the end we managed to get around 80+ out of 100 (not sure what scoring system was used back then, think about previous numbers as percents) due our last few members who presented most of the work amazingly well despite the fact that they had barely seen the final version... ah the good times.

i am not a fan of group projects either but i haven't had any problems like this. luckily the people i have been grouped with care a lot about their grades, and our teachers implemented a system where we get to grade each other. if you don't work, i am going to give you a zero out of ten bitch! but yeah, definitely go to bed. either way, it's probably a good idea to talk to your teacher about what happened.

Man I hate group work where you get randomly assigned groups. Everything's much better when you get to pick your own, because everybody wants the hard workers in their group, so they get the pick of the crop. The other guys who don't do shit all end up together in their own little group but fuck them it's their fault they got themselves that shitty reputation.

Whenever I have to do group work, I talk to the team right at the beginning and make them all agree that if someone is lazy and doesn't do anything, their name isn't going on the assignment. Then, since they know they will be held accountable, they tend to put forth more effort.

Update:

One person ditched the presentation

the 7 of us had to present, and we got completely owned. It completely showed through that we did not prepare at all. Since we did peer grading, I completely nuked the CEO and some other guy. 27/40 ftw.

Dude, welcome to the real world. Most people are absolute idiots and incompetent in every way. If you're going to bitch about group work, and you want shit done, be the CEO yourself. Assign people very specific things to do, and if they don't do it, use peer shame. That works especially well in high school.

Most universities emphasize teamwork nowadays, because a lot of companies are complaining that though graduates have the necessary credentials, they don't have the people skills to work in a group. My comp sci teacher, for example, makes the project a lot more work if you choose to work by yourself.

CEO was assigned by teacher.

Doesn't mean you can't steal his/her power. I've worked in more than one group with a "voted" or "assigned" CEO where I just took over. If they really are that incompetent, they probably wouldn't even mind that you're taking over his/her responsibilities. If they are whiny bitches about it, point to the fact that they ain't doing shit.

God group projects can be oh so gay. Luckily my first project I'm having this year my group is all competent people who want to get something done. Not the most dedicated people but atleast they dont ditch out, and actually contribute. Nothing worse than a "useless appendage" though that's usually just the term I reserve for stupid partners.

Sucks when you can't do anything about it and this happens. A normal teacher would recognize who fits into what category of work/do shit all, and try to balance groups so I'm assuming atleast two of the people are motivated if all else fails.
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Oh goodness me, FOX tv where do you get your sight? Can't you keep track, the puck is black. That's why the ice is white.
