I've lived in Indiana for 98% of my life. Indiana has only recently begun to observe daylight savings. (I'm currently in Texas which observes DST) So this is very confusing for me sometimes.

DST went into effect today for the US (Approximately 2 hours ago)

I'm reading on a time website that DST doesn't go into effect in Europe until March 29th?

Why is this?

I must say I really hate DST. If it were up to me (too bad it isn't) there wouldn't even be different time zones. I think everyone should all have the exact same time across the world, and you simply do things at different times of the day.

What are your thoughts on Daylight savings and how do you feel about it?

North America use to do daylight savings time at the same time as the Europeans but apparently it saves more energy to start it sooner.

I hate the time changes. Just stick to one god damn time please.

It makes me unhappy in that "shake my fist for a moment" way.

In other words, I don't really hate it, but I am unhappy at losing an hour off my spring break.
Think. :)

well, daylight saving is there to make summer evenings longer, which just about everyone likes.

and honestly, do you think it would be a great idea for 3:00am in japan to be daylight? it makes sense to standardize times of the day to make travel and communication more natural.

When you're far from the equator it makes quite a difference.
Well at least I know it's quite noticeable here, and it was started by an english guy.
No I'm never serious.

It sucks that South Korea doesn't observe DST, so now the live PL streams are even later for me. Now I'll probably be able to catch 1 game of the 13:00 stream if I'm lucky....

Potential benefits and how they are all lies:

+ Show Spoiler +

Energy Saving: At best, not enough to be noticeable or statistically significant, and in many cases actually increases energy consumption due to the need for more heating in the mornings and more cooling in the afternoons.

Increases "Leisure Time" and Boosts Economy: Won't help in a recession. Extra daylight may benefit shopping but may hurt other industries like bars or theaters or in front of their television screens where most people go when its dark. With consumer confidence crazily low, DST this year probably won't help a bit. This isn't the middle ages, we don't need sunlight to have fun. + Show Spoiler +
STARCRAFT!!!!!!!!!!
Also, some argue that the time shifts lead to productivity losses and may actually hurt the economy.+ Show Spoiler +
STARCRAFT!!!!!!!!!!

Health concerns: Extra sunlight is never bad, unless its so much that you get cancer (Tropics region) or for half the day there is no sunlight, affecting mood etc during working hours, reducing productivity (Hello, Alaska). Extra sunlight may encourage excercise, but personally, I like to exercise when its dark. And, as always there's the jet lag effect of shifting time zones.....

So in conclusion, DST offers marginal benefits at best, yet many are led to believe in the contrary. I don't see the point of messing everyone's schedules up just to have potential returns. Risk assessment says that's not worth it.

I thank wikipedia for all the information!
This statement is a lie.

What? DST is the most useful thing ever...

You get more daylight in the evenings. Opens up so many possibilities, more time to do things outside etc. I really don't see the downsides to DST.

Oh really? Seeing how parts of Australia don't even use DST, and that when Australia first implemented DST, energy consumption actually went up, I don't see how that's justified

To be honest I really don't care about the energy consumption factor. I just enjoy that when DST is on it stays light till around 8:00pm. I think only QLD and NT don't use DST, the rest of the country does.

I was talking with a friend about this last night. He said that a study showed DST actually increased the potential for heart attacks because it raises stress levels in most people.

That can't be good

DST was implemented to lower stress and increase productivity. It's based on the principle that people who get up and go to work in the dark only to come home in the dark are more depressed and don't work as hard. i think

Surely that will balance out when the clocks go back and everyone gets an extra hour to chill out though?

Well I guess you're right, but honestly anyone who gets stressed out over losing a single hour to the point where they have a heart attack kinda deserves it.

I think the body automatically stress's out when the circadian rhythms are disrupted by what is essentially a change in time zone (jet lag effect)

Meh, I have mixed feelings about that. A lot of the time I don't get back from work or from hanging out with friends until 11:30-11:45 which caused me to miss some games most nights. Still, that means staying up pretty late if the match goes past 5 games.
