ok my friend asked me generally why i he kept losing.

i sent him a link to the rec. threads in the strat section.

i told him not to read the builds until after u read the bare basics in teh begginer section.

idk if he read all of it. but was it the right thing to do? i still asnwered his questions about when to scout as a certain race.

this is wrong. he needs to know builds first so that he can start practicing on something and actually get results before he gets discouraged.

give him a build first. those "beginner stuffs" are pretty much intuition after a while of playing with a build and watching progamer vods.

I disagree. You can see it in the people who learn to +1 Zealot rush but have no idea why it works, and how to react to any variations. The OP did the right thing in trying to teach him the fundamentals. Tell him to watch VODs and replays and try to understand why certain tactics and strategies work, a la this guide: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=66048

I agree with about. Build orders are something that simply organize your play. This is what prevents most terrans from going wraiths versus protoss. Help him get a guideline into his game, and he can slowly add in hotkeys, micro, macro, etc.

Depending on how good your friend is this was a good idea or not. If he is brand knew to SC he won't know what 12 hatch or 10 gate meant. If he is knew just teach him the basics and the abbreviations for all the buildings and explain to him what every unit does and it's hot keys. If he is familiar with SC then I guess you did the right thing, but it is always good to know one build after you get the basics.

After teaching my friend today i think that one of the best ways is after maybe the first/2nd day of playing and just getting used to things, to get him to speed up and get a bit better just have him play a computer, whilst you obs and dictate to him you know, not so much a build order but

e.g.

make a pylon here
you've stopped making probes keep making them
ok get another gate
rally those gates to the ramp

after doing this about 5 times they should be getting to grips a bit more with the speed of the game and some of the basic like using controls and making units etc..

hes not that great. hes kinda n00b right now. but i can drill him :{ )
