I have to write a 20 page essay for homework this semester for my international affairs class (kinda like world politic class) and the teacher is letting us pick ANY topic related to my politics. This can include past historical data or pretty much anything world related.

Now the trick to writing a long essay is talking about something specific so that you can list the examples and compare, etc.

I was just wondering if you guys can help me brainstorm so I can pick a topic

Relationships between west and middle east? (starting from European involvement in Ottoman Empire, to UN mandates, to Palestine/Israel conflicts, to current wars)

Relations between the west and asia would be good as well (Marco Polo, Commodore Perry, Spanish-American war/Phillipinnes, European imperialism, spheres of influence in China, Open Door Policy)

And also, West and Latin America (Pan America Conference, Monroe Doctrine, Roosevelt Corollary, Cuba, Panama Canal and conflict with Colombia, Mexican revolution (PANCHO VILLA!!!!!!!!!)

Sorry if my input seems limited, mainly from US history class i'm in right now.

Oh yea, Cold War stuff is good too

Do you want current stuff or historical stuff?
This statement is a lie.

Write about a fairly modern political scandal. Modern, so there's a lot of news about it, that's searchable on the internet, and political scandal, because news corporations like talking about them. You could try talking about the corruption trial, and subsequent conviction of (former) Alaskan senator Ted Stevens.

International economics if you plug the idea's that government/policy makers are required to create solid economic framework for a nation.
There is so much to write about with international economics its not funny.

It depends on what you're interested in. I'd pick something specific so you don't just write a vague crapstorm. 20 pages isn't enough to do an even half-decent job on anything too general, but you can decently summarize something more specific.

20 pages about politics? that hurts. But linking politics to economics is a good suggestion
Many people say to me that political science, though interesting, is all bs, is it true?

I want to do something more past and more about like history / war related

How about something like correlation between inflation and war?

But then is there much I can talk about? Country goes poor, inflation happens, people rage, war starts. Thats pretty much all I can think of

Reviewing that correlation requires good knowledge about economics, let alone politics. I dont know, but you will have to read a lot

Write about the affect that America's banking collapse is having on the rest of the world, particularly the EU and countries like Iceland.

You get politics, economics and IR/IPE without actually needing a thorough understanding of economics. You can write about the political pressures that each government is facing, their various options, etc.

This one seems interesting but what are some points I can talk about so I can fill up my paper?

Well yeah I know that, and I appreciate what you've done for me so far, but I just wanted to see if a topic like that has enough points to be able to fill up a long essay. Just like 2 sentence description or something. Anyway, if not, thanks anyway

Ok I pretty much decided on my topic

"The Economic Effects of Unipolarity on the U.S. and the rest of the world"

I might limit it to simply U.S. to make it more specific but that should give me a good 20 page paper

It definitely does. Just quickly break down what happened in the US, and then describe how it affected the rest of the world by looking at the pressures it put on individual countries, and then the EU as a whole.

To do this, you're going to have to do a lot of newspaper reading since it's the best source of information for modern events. Think tanks like Brookings and others will probably have good analyses too.

Dude this is great. Thanks a lot. I can probably also use past examples like old empires crumbling because lack of finance and internal struggle. I can pretty much say how U.S. is killing itself by assuming massive responsibilites and how that turns into bad effect for other major countries because how economic market is interconnected.

Gee great stuff

Thanks again
