Post-exam time. I'm trying to gather my high school friends to have some fun together. We decide to go to a pub and play a poker tournament.
I play poker just occassionaly, so do they, but we enjoy it and always have lot of fun. Buy-in isn't any big, but we aren't there for making money.
As we start I feel in good condition (or beers do it). Watching Daniel Negreanu's precise play, Gus Hansen's manliness and Phil Hellmuth's inappropriate behaviour whole last night sets me in right poker mood.
Inspirated by Gus I start rather aggressively and lose about 1/5 of my chips early on, feeling the same way as if I was trying to pull out some pro starcraft strategy.
Nevertheless, it gives me few information about my opponents and how they are playing tonight. I'm slowly getting back my chips having some really good hands (A to 5 straight) as well as nicely performed blufs and semi-blufs.
We are now sitting three at the table I have around 1/4 of whole chips. With the other guy who has about the same we go all-in. We both have set of eights, I'm luckily the one with ace, thus eliminating him. Twice as happy because he was probably the strongest player in the tournament and I had lost numerous heads ups to him.
So here we are, heads up. I know I'm better than my opponent, because he's relatively new to poker. With same amount of chips after I doubled up I'm pretty confident. And really, step by step I'm getting in a lead, however not safe enough. The blinds are big and single bad played hand may put me behind again.
And so the moment of truth comes.
I get King of Hearts, and some shitty card, I'm big blind. He calls, I check.
Flop: Ace of Hearts, Queen of Hearts, Jack of Hearts
With really big blinds he goes all-in.
I'm angry and don't want to fold such a promising hand. But I know he has either AQ, AJ, QJ or more likely (because has he had AQ, AJ, QJ, he would probably bet on pre-flop) two hearts. And if he has two hearts I know I should not call it.
But I say fuck it, I won't offend poker gods and I may not have another chance in my poker life so I call.
As I thought he has two hearts. Last two cards will determinate the winner.

It doesn't matter though. I don't care about all this.
I'm just so fascinated by what I see on the table. The combination each poker player dreams about. In such a tense moment. Can't be described, you just have to experience it.
These are the situations when you forget everything bothering you and make you realize it's worth living for.
Life is good.
(By the way, first and only topic I made on TL before this was [OSL] Wildcard.. coincidence?)

I know what this feels like, won €110 in the first poker tournament I played. Got lucky most of the way through, then when it went to heads up I got a straight flush on the 3rd last hand. ( 5-9 spades)
Haven't played for money since, figured I should quit while I was ahead

You have the K of hearts and the A of hearts flopped which gives you a nut flush draw (even without a royal flush), why are you scared of the 2 of hearts?

let me get this straight, he calls the blind, and you check in the BB, and then on the flop, in a pot that consists of 2 big blinds, he shoves what is presumably a bet that is several times the pot after flopping a flush

LOL true, to the op: in poker sets are three of a kind when you have a pocket pair and catch the third on the table. So i guess you didnt had a set.

You are correct, but by actual definition its more like: Trips is having 3 cards of the same value. Two persons can have trips on any given hand. Set is having the only possible three cards for the cards value. Only one person can have a set of any given card value. That's in essence what it is. The result is that any three cards of the same value make trips, but only having a pair as hole cards makes a set if another card of that value is played on the table.
If for example you have a KK and the flop comes out A K 6 you floped a set, but at showdown the dealer calls it as "Roxen000 wins with trip K's..." (you'll never hear a dealer say "Player wins with set A's" or "Player wins with a set of A's).
tl;dr: Trips is any combination of cards with the same face value. A set is the only possible trips of a certain face value. A set is a trips, but not any trips is a set.

so a few months ago i'm playing 10/20 at the bellagio and WTF NELLY the rapper with his hardcore posse rock up and he takes a seat next to me on my right
we play for about an hour
he takes a liking to me for some reason, telling me lots of stories. i asked him wtf is up with the bandaid and why isn't he wearing it

we kept playing for a while then one hand came up where i bet on the turn, and some dude raised me pretty big. then as soon as the dude raised me nelly accidentally spilled coffee all over my leg. i was in poker mode so i didn't react to it (wasn't that hot), instead i just slowly turned my head to Nelly, said 'look what you did, you made me mad' then grabbed a huge stack of 100's and flung them into the middle putting the guy allin (i had a really good hand and actually wanted the guy to call me but i thought it was a win win move cause if the guy folds i look like a badass and if he calls i get all his money.)
the guy then folded and i took the pot and me and nelly got me a stack of napkins from some realy hot waitress. after getting the napkins as she walked away he just stood there staring at her ass and 5 steps away she turned around and watched him watching and giggled (damn wat a pimp)
nelly then gave me the napkins and even helped me wipe off my leg and asks me 'THAT WAS A BLUFF WASNT IT?'
of course i lied and said yes to look cool infront of nelly
he then put his hand in the form of a fist and said 'thats ma boooooooooooooooi' and we did the pound

LOL ive played with him 3 times and he's won every time
one time he got it allin with 88 on 9872 board vs two guys both had JT for nuts
river paired the board and nelly had a full house and he got up and was jumping around with his chains jiggling blinging everywhere going BOAT BOAT BOAT HAHAHA BOAT BOAT BOATTTTT

I guess still better than help-me-with-girl stories, though I understand it's not interesting for someone who makes living with it.
