I have this issue that when I'm studying I start thinking about Team Liquid and I want to share an idea with all of you. At that point I can't concentrate on what I'm doing so I figured I could get this out of the way real quick.

As a fledgling computer programmer I think that it is only right that I have a pet project. I personally am a big stickler about my digital music library when it comes to thing like track names, artwork etc.. (After this I'm going to recut an album I got off the NPR website because they seperated the tracks in the wrong place.) I realized a second ago that you could attach song lyrics to tracks, and I though "Oh Shit! What if I went through and attached lyrics to 4000 tracks! that would be crazy!" Of course that would take way to fucking long. So here's my idea: A program that uses a search engine to find lyrics and attach them to tracks. That would be cool.

Of course I don't even know how ID3 tags work so this could be really difficult. What do you think?

PS To all of you that read that as "Progamming Idra" and came here thinking it was going to be awesome, sorry.

If you get it done, you could easily sell it for $5 and make a killing.

Of course, you'd have to release it to TL.net for free.

I use Media Monkey for tagging large numbers of mp3s, and Leo's Lyrics plugin for Winamp to search for lyrics while playing and storing them in the mp3 tag.

As long as you don't do it like MS and destroy the file in the process...

About the ID3 tag: There's this neat website that has a lot of file formats listed, not being one of those ugly knowledge stealing places.. Wotsit's format?

from the top of my head I know it's a simple format, just a bunch of junk added to the end of an MP3 file. (It originated as an ad-hoc method that would not break existing players that didn't support the tag. Those players just ignored the extra data (or played the almost soundless bytes? not sure).)

But ehm, the thing that you are looking to create, already exists. Of course you can still go ahead. In case you want a pointer to an example of what I mean.. Leo's Lyrics is a big database that uses ID3 information in the same way. It's an online service, that I used once in a blue moon via a plug-in for winamp. The site, btw, is ridden with ads of course.. Long time ago that I used the plug-in, but it might be 'ad-supported' as well. Of course you could send queries to the leo lyrics server, as your means of searching, basically creating a local backup of the database for your files.

Edit: Scorch, you thunder stealer!
I <3 the internet, I <3 you

Then no one would buy it, instead make a crack for it, or get more experienced programmers to write a better program (no offense to op)

Software should be free.

Every single linux media player does this and is open source. I suggest you take a look at Sonata (requires zsi for lyrics fetching support) because it's simple and written in Python.

Others:
Exaile (Python)
Banshee (.NET [mono])
Amarok (C++ I think, complex)

etc etc etc

iTunes does this if you import it from a CD or have all of the correct Album, Artist, and Song Name information. You have to jump through a few hoops to get it to work though. (You might even require 3rd party software. If I've done that I don't remember doing so... It's been a while.)

However, many people hate iTunes or some reason and I think many would have use for this. Plus a good project if you're looking to have some fun. (Fun I guess is the right word. <.<)

Why? Because you don't want to pay for it?? The people who write code do a lot of it for fun, but they've gotta eat too, you know. What are you going to tell the folks at Wolfram and Microsoft and Apple and any other company that produces software?

Lol maybe this?

But yeah I think making new program takes time and effort and should be rewarded by money.
