15, June, 2008 Conditions: Black Ice - Jumping a curb causing minor underside damage to car Results: Self repairs were sufficient, totaling $0.00, however loss of trust from parents to use their vehicles. Where do you find black ice in June? I'm glad you and everyone else is ok. Hopefully you learned something from it. Does it vary state by state? I only ask because when I worked for Canada Customs, many people were surprised that they could not enter Canada because if had a DUI. (People with a felony cannot enter Canada, but the charge is determined under Canadian law, not the place it happened). They thought they would be ok because it was not a felony back home.

Varies by state, but generally, first offense isn't a felony. Second+ or if there is injury/accident, it's a felony. Regardless of this though, even your first time goes on your permanent record (which is probably why people couldn't enter Canada, and why it hurts future job searches)

People like this make me worry just about any time one of my family members starts to drive. Too many people who are close to me have been killed by people like this. There's no excuse. Perhaps I'm bitter, but seriously... think it through before you drive. Though i'm glad everything turned out well in the end.

Yea, it was my first time trying southern comfort (awesome with mountain dew btw), when the police asked I was too nervous to remember the name so I just said vodka. (Oh I just realized what you are talking about, meant to say alcohol) edit: The beginning of the blog was supposed to be a theme of all rain because it was pouring rain the night I got arrested and that was a reason I was pulled over (my windows were down and I was driving slow because I was drunk and knew it was raining). but for some reason I wrote black ice. I actually hydroplaned up onto a curb scraping the bottom of the car, the only thing that broke were those plastic things covering the underside of your car protecting your engine and stuff from debris when driving. I was able to reattach them with wire instead of ordering new bolts.

(like for example in looking for jobs) You can have a very hard time finding employment in any government related jobs. In the military it can hurt your chances of passing security clearances for more sensitive positions. Some places simply don't hire you when the background check brings up a DUI. Luckily being my first offense, with more time and money I can go through a process of "expunging" my record of the dui, to which it will only be kept in police records for their personal use, not to the public and background checks.

However asking them to think before they drink is probably a more reasonable request. The reason alot of people drive drunk is because well.. they're drunk. At least for me when I'm drunk, I'm fully aware of everything I'm doing and that any of it is wrong, or really wrong, but there is no perception of the consequences of actions anymore.

On a related note: for those who are interested, check out last week's 60 minutes piece on recent trends in prosecution of drunk drivers: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4697676n The upshot is that in some really extreme cases, some prosecutors are starting to charge drunk drivers with murder. I say, I tend to agree. I think it's a good debate to have.
