This blog is going to discuss my favourite genre of metal. Chances are you've never heard of it, but you've heard at least one band. This genre itself is almost as controversial as Deathcore right now, and for good reason I guess.
Slam Death itself is just normal Brutal Death Metal a la Disgorge, but it is riddled with "slams", which are groovy off time breakdowns. They are heavily influenced by bands like Suffocation and Internal Suffering. The main difference between Slam Death, and Deathcore is the abscence of hardcore influence, none of those metalcore vocals, and the production is a lot "heavier".
Here are my top 5 Slam CD's. lol.
#1 Devourment - Molesting The Decapitated
This CD may not have the best production, or may not be their most known anymore, but it is the starting of the Slam scene. All band's in this scene owe everything to this one cd. It's more... grindcore/deathgrind in sound then their future works, but it works just as well. The slams are decimating, their drumming mind blowing. It was released in 1999.
#2 Human Mincer - Degradation Paradox
Human Mincer was a third tier Slam band, until they gained Guilemoth and Phlegeton, both of the band Wormed. This addition lead to them releasing this cd, which is one crushing piece of music. The production is PERFECT. The drumming can compare to Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy, the riff's catchy as hell, and the vocals... well, you've never heard anything like this before. Released in 2008.
#3 Vomit Remnants - Supreme Vehemence
Vomit Remnants is a Japanese Slam band that used to use a drum machine, albeit quite well. This is a compilation of their full length + EP, and it is quite good. Groovy, catchy slam. Drum machine is done tastefully. I don't really know what else to say, it just sounds great.
#4 Devourment - Butcher The Weak
This is just Molesting The Decapitated with better production, but a worse vocalist. The riff's/drumming have improved tenfold, but the vocalist switch from Ruben Rosas to Mike Majewski hampers it. His vocal's aren't as good as Ruben's, or as heavy. But the cd itself is great.
#5 Abysmal Torment - Epoch Of Methodic Carnage
This 5 piece from Malta released this heavy as hell album. It's almost Deathgrind, but it retains the slam's. Crazy and fast as hell. Recommended hearing. Nothing really else to say about it, except if you don't enjoy tinny drums, you may not enjoy this at all.
Other bands to look for include Cephalotripsy, Aversion To Life, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Abominable Putridity, Vulvectomy, The Partisan Turbine (Brutal Deathcore/Slam), and Wormed.

PS: I listen to everything from Daft Punk to Exodus. I love all genre's of music to some point, so don't attack my musical taste. Even Classical is great to these ears.

I'll never get why people listen to Devourment or other slam death bands when you can just listen to Suffocation. It doesn't get better than the band they all worship... It's like... every Devourment breakdown is a rip off from a Suffocation track and Devourment is the crème de la crème of slam death. That says a lot about the genre itself...
Either way this is good workout music, but your favorite genre of music? Really? You must have a really narrow taste in music

Not at all Hollow.
I find Devourment superior to Suffocation.
And my musical taste is nowhere near Narrow. 
I just really enjoy this stuff.
And you could say the same about all genre's of music.
Why listen to the millions of metalcore/deathcore bands when bands like Converge, and Coalesce have done it so much better.
Why listen to the new thrash when old Kreator records were done so much better. etc. lol

I find that hard to believe... not trying to act condescending or anything but it's just that I see it the same way as I would see a pop music fan tell me that he's open-minded and has eclectic taste so he doesn't have a narrow taste in music. I just don't buy it when their favorite genre is shallow, empty manufactured music. Not saying it's the same for BDM/SDM but it's still monotonous and as you will agree with me doesn't have much room for innovation

and yeah I totally agree. I don't see why you would listen to other metalcore than Converge or Botch. I don't see why listen to other death metal than Immolation and Gorguts and a few others. Yep it works with everything for me.

Yes, but just because it's my favourite genre, does not mean that I'm a closed minded individual towards music.
I love some rap. Love techno. Love old rock, country etc.
I'm open to everything. And I enjoy almost everything.
And yes, I understand there's little to no room for innovation in BDM/Slam, but that's not what I'm looking for in that genre. I just want to find album's that take what Suffocation/Devourment have done, and perfect it.

haha. I understand your viewpoint Hollow, but the way I see it is a view like that is ignorant, and will probably limit you from finding music that you enjoy immensely.
You can't always compare a band to their influences, because more often then not, they won't live up to it, but they can be great in their own way.

Again, you're making the mistake of mixing up open-mindedness with actual eclectic tastes. They're quite different. I never said you were close-minded, I can't know that and I had no indications to make such a claim. My claim was that, chances are, if your favorite genre of music is fairly generic and doesn't have room for improvement; your taste in music is most likely very narrow. This is just a generalization.

I fail to see how it is ignorant to prefer what's the best out of any genres. That's what I seek when I find new music that I like. I'll try to progress in the ladder and end up listening to the best of the best. Then I see no reason to go back down, unless it's a guilty pleasure. But guilty pleasures are pretty rare, I prefer challenging myself and listening to favorites which I still have to learn from, or new things to keep on adding to my musical knowledge. That sounds like the opposite of musical ignorance to me.

Yea, I understand completely. Although the music I enjoy is generic, it does have plenty of room for improvement, and my taste in music is definately not narrow. But I understand why you'd have the generalization.
I just don't want to be part of that. I love a wide spectrum of music.

Then again, a wide spectrum of music doesn't necessarily mean that you're making efforts and challenging yourself, but that's another subject.

But I think it's worth noting that it was actually my point initially when saying that you must've had a narrow taste in music.
It wasn't about eclectic tastes or open-mindedness, I was simply stating that you must not be challenging yourself often (if at all) with whatever music you are listening to if your favorite genre is a generic one. That wasn't a generalization in fact, it was aimed directly at you, but it can be used as a generalization as well because it's just logical.
So basically you can listen and enjoy rap/techno/brutal death metal and country music if you want, even though that's considered eclectic and indicates a level of open-mindedness, those aren't redeeming qualities in this case to me since they're all genres filled with generic stuff that doesn't challenge the listener - making the person have a narrow taste in music (formulaic music, no matter the genre tags put on it, stays formulaic music if you know what I mean)
Personally, I do enjoy doom metal more than anything else (right now). That's just my personal preference, whereas for you it's slam death. So yeah I'll explore that genre in particular a lot more than others since it's my absolute favorite, just like you do, but I'll never just listen to doom metal because I don't want to be stale. I want to always be thrown new music at and be challenged by great music. Something that few people bother with, but I think it's really important, even though it isn't as instantly gratifying as listening to my favorite artists and/or genres. Unrelated I know but, I know a bunch of people with great taste in metal but that's all they listen to, and I think it's a real shame.

Yes, these band's aren't really intelligent at all.
It's almost caveman like.
And the lyrics are extremely... well, disgusting for the most part.

I'm not a big fan of Suffocation tbh. Then again, I don't like Brutal dm anyways. Give me Obituary or Autopsy any day~
Though I do like Effigy of the Forgotten.

that's like one of the most defining albums of the genre.

To be honest, there's large differences between most slam bands and suffocation. In production, riffs, and breakdowns.
But I do love Suffocation too.

it's probably because Suffocation is one of those death metal bands that also gets classified as technical. brutal technical death metal if you will. up there with Cryptopsy
but yeah, i know what you mean. i don't like a lot of pure brutal death metal, a lot of it tends to come off as noise.
