You can get a student license for a couple hundred bucks at places like studica.com (and it has no limitations whatsoever, it's just that under the student license you're not legally allowed to use it for profit), but the real deal costs $2000 or $7000 depending on whether you get the full version ("Unlimited") that has fluid effects and stuff like that (not worth it imo, using a program like Real Flow for fluid effects is way better). Then there's always pirating  My school has licenses on all the computers in the animation lab so I just go work there since my friends are always there working anyways. Anyways as for tips, I have no idea what your level of experience in general with 3d is, but if it's none, this program will baffle you and you will be extremely lost. I remember opening the program for the first time in like 10th grade and then getting so overwhelmed, closing it, and not opening it again for like a year. I suggest if you want to learn it you check out the tutorials over at digital-tutors.com. They have some really good videos, including some maya basics videos that can help you in the getting started phase (which is the hardest imo since once you know how to move around and interact with the program you can figure out the other stuff by messing around for long enough). | ||
