I am having a fierce argument with my mom over whether or not two spaces are needed after a period. I've always done just one and never had a teacher tell me otherwise.

So TL, is there a right and a wrong here? Or is Either one ok?

It was two back on the days with a type writer now since computers have came out, i think the computer automatically puts two, so either one really works in my opinion. In elementary school, i was always told to do two, but in highschool i was told to do one. i still do two cuz i learned it first and it stuck as a habit.

The older generation (before computers) always say two. But now it's one. I dunno if it's directly because of computers but the norm is definitely 1 now.

I think for formal papers and the such it's still 2 spaces.

It doesn't matter anymore. Two is good if otherwise it would look messy, and I imagine it was two in the typewriter days to make it more readable, since the courier font is monospace.

Nowadays, it doesn't really matter, as Times New Roman is the new standard. Putting two spaces will help lengthen an assignment if you're having trouble with length. ;P

Another cheap trick is to increase all periods and other unobtrusive punctuation marks a couple sizes larger. It's not noticeable unless you're submitting it electronically. hehe.

I'm writing a paper right now and I'm definitely using two spaces after a period. Always have... always will.

edit: and wtf with all the people trying to artificially increase the length of your papers... how dumb is that?

Really, I learned it was 2 wayyy back in elementary school. Don't think the official number has changed since then.

@Micronesia: I know really, adding an extra space probably won't even get you an extra line lol. Better to make it 12.5 font and 1.15 space.

I have always used two and everyone I talk to thought I was weird (they all used one). I'm glad that in at least one, possibly superficial, way it is justified.

It's 2, for more informal papers 1 is probably okay. For stuff like government documents and court papers they are very, very anal about 2 spaces. I worked for a judge and even with justified margins (spacing of words would change every line) he could easily pick out when there was only 1 space, and would correct it out of like a 40 page opinion haha.

I did this in third grade when I wrote an article for a class newsletter or something... I think the teacher went through the file and manually added spaces to make it readable haha.

But if you REALLY don't have anything more to write about, and you get desperate...it's a handy tool.

On the last paper I wrote, which was a term paper, we were only supposed to have 6-8, and I ended up turning in 12 and a half...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_spacing

I use two as I've been taught to use two, but in most printed works they use only one, and most typesetters recommend using only one. I remember reading this a while back (sin #4), but I'm still not sure if I agree that not doing it is a sin, rather than simply preference.

To me it's the same as using normal commas, or Oxford commas. Most places recommend using a normal comma, I tend to use an Oxford comma because it makes more sense to me.

I always make a conscious effort to not use serial commas but then I compulsively go back and add them in because it sounds fucked if I don't.

Grammatically you're supposed to use two, which I do. Just because everyone on the internet uses one doesn't make it correct. "Lol" isn't an actual word, yet it's probably the most used word on the entire internet. Asking a forum for advice on grammar probably isn't the best idea.
