Hello guys.

I'm considering about taking a semester in USA in the fall of 2009.
My university here in Denmark is working together with some universities in USA, and the ones I'm looking into are:

University of Virginia
North Carolina State University
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Are there any TL.netters studying at any of these universities?
How is it?
EDIT: I'm not doing this for the academics, but you could still say something about it.
I'm MUCH more interested in the social aspect of it!
I want to learn about/experience American culture!

I'll have a bachelors degree in molecular biology next summer, but I don't necessarily have to only choose courses that have something to do with that.

Other options could be:
University of Texas at Austin
University of Washington, Seattle
University of Florida, Gainesville
University of of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
Purdue University, West Lafayette

Anyone studying at any of these universites?

Thanks in advance !

Edit: Damn, should it be 'Help me find' instead of 'finding'?

if its only one semester why care about the academics. Personally all of those unis are outstanding when it comes to academics.

My pick would be University of Florida (sunny and lots of hot spanish girls)

Yeah, I'm not doing it for the academics at all, only for the chance to experience another country for a longer period

My biased opinion is to go to Purdue (since I am currently studying there now).

If you really care about academics, then I would say probably University of of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (that is if you are doing some kind of of science/engineering major).

Yeah, It really depends on what you want to study. UVa has a really good medical school, as i recal, but Viriginia Tech is way better for engineering. UVa does have good academics in general, though, as do most of the colleges you're looking at.

I go to the University of Washington. What are you planning on studying? The quality varies heavily depending upon which department you're going for.

Of those Illinois is the strongest school, especially for science/engineering as stated above. Try UNC Chapel Hill for good liberal arts education. But all of the schools listed are respectable academically.

If you're here to see culture, maybe you should pick one in a city? Virginia, UNC Chapel Hill, UIUC, and Purdue are all in smallish college towns, although you can look at other factors. For that matter, NC State in Raleigh may not be too interesting I think. Same for UF in Gainesville. On the other hand, UNC is very close to Duke and nearby NC State anyhow. Also, UIUC is just a couple hours from Chicago. I forget where Gainesville is in Florida even though I've been there. -_-;;

So think Austin and Seattle? About student life, I know somebody that is at or used to go to all of the above except Washington, but my own knowledge is limited. Hrms.

edit: also, look at the size of the student body. Florida, Texas, Illinois are big I know. Others kind of medium-ish (~20,000 total undergrad + grad).

hi btw anders

I edited the original post now, and like I said, it's not about the academics at all, since all those universities are good enough for my level of ambition.

My plan is to get a couple of cell biology/biochemistry courses and then some American history.

Good post, thanks.
I honestly don't know what will be best for me, a smaller college town, or a big city. I'd just like to hear your guy's experiences about studying at any of the listed universities, since I have no idea about what ANY of them are about.
