I am going to start playing WoW. There. I said it. I have always been anti-WoW, but honestly there is not a better mmo out there. So here is my question. How do WoW expansions work? If I make a new account, do I have to pay $30 to upgrade to BC AND $40 for WotLK? That's pretty steep.

Haha im playing WoW atm.
You can pay just the $20 and get original WoW w/o any expansions but you can't access any BC content until you upgrade.
That won't make too much of a difference until you're higher level (like 55+) unless you want to make either a Blood Elf or Dreinei character.
Then its kind of the same story for WotLK. You can interact with BC and WotLK players perfectly fine, you just can't do anything expansion related.

I feel bad for you. You pretty much have sold your soul to the devil. Now forget about good grades or a girlfriend. No, just keep focused on getting to lvl 80, that's all that matters....
In all seriousness, there pretty much is no better mmo. I was looking for a wow killer like warhammer but meh, it doens't like it will even scratch wow's fan base. I mean 11 million players, cmon.

Also there should be a battle chest with WoW + BC and then you need WotLK. Also, be sure to level up with Recruit-A-Friend and an add-on like Questhelper.

Despite all the bashing by the non-wowers.
WOW IS A REALLY GOOD GAME.
there i said it

wow is probably the worst mmo lvls 1-70 (SERIOUSLY) however, levels 70-80, it feels like a totally different game a different game I actually enjoy
ps: Playing wow alone = teh sux. Play with a friend, it's less boring leveling up.

My grades already suck (lazyness, and lack of effort, time is the one resource I have excess of), and there are going to be too many girl dramas for me this winter break already, so those aren't issues.
I completely understand all the criticism. I have been a hater for years.
I guess I will be playing vanilla until 60, unless someone who doesn't play anymore wants to donate a BC account to me.
Also, I have a large group of friends who play on Sargeras, so friends will not be a problem.

I just read about the Recruit-A-Friend system and it makes very little logistical sense.
The vet account is supposed to be lower level, therefore play less, BUT stay within level to get the 3x xp.
Why would someone who is newly recruited play MORE than the veteran (read: wownerd) who recruited them?
|
You play together and get 3times the experience.
So you pretty much only play together, everything else would just be stupid. And when you leveled up a pair of characters, the vet account gets another free lvl 30, because of the bonus levels.
|
Ohhh you can level up a different character. Gotttit.
|
3x experience leveling is sooooooooo nice
mine just ran out, and like three free months, dont care enough to subscribe again

To the OP: Well, I once wanted to play WoW so bad but once you realise how much a waste of time it is, you'd just get over it. Silly game though. Never playing it again.

I almost fell back into WoW a few days ago when the new expansion was realeased. Then I played like 1 game of SC and byebye WoW

There's a kid in my dorm who plays WoW. I've seen him out of his chair like 3 times in the time since school started. I don't think I've seen him interact with a real live human yet...

what i did is i got the original one and leveld to 60 then got bc then i waited for wotlk to come out

People who complain about WoW being a timesink really need to stop being such a hypocrit, because lets be honest while your dream is to be a SC progamer it probably wont happen and all that time playing SC is a timesink.
Either way, the expansion is okay, I play about an hour a day unless I've got alot of stuff to do.

Seriously shoot yourself since you won't be needing your life anymore
Take it from an ex-wowplayer...
Edit: to the above, I just watch the best SC vods. It's like watching football for me

i am still playing the wow trial, hard to decide whether to play wow or not... each year you pay $180, in the end you get nothing, can't even play it without paying subscription and it is too slow by my standard..

Either way, the expansion is okay, I play about an hour a day unless I've got alot of stuff to do. Playing SC and being involved in the community isn't really a timesink. It isn't like you get nothing out of it, I've met people I never would have if I wasn't involved in TL and SC.

Wow is a giant chatroom with a theme that everyone there can relate too. Everyone can meet friends there, which I think is one of the biggest draws of the game.

WTF WOW GOODBYE LIFE LOL!!!
Obviously if you play wow you have no choice but to play it 12 hours a day because people don't have any self control. Seriously only 3% or less of the people who play wow probably play that much.

save your life and start learning a new language or something. This game will steal your soul as well as at least two years of your life

funny if you change all the "wow" in posts for "Starcraft", it still makes sense.

seriously calm down with the "no-life" thing. anyone with half a brain and decent selfcontrol can maintain himself to just a few hours of play per week.
and why are people keep saying you will "lose" 2 years of your life? Isn't it the same with every thing you start and then stop one time or another? when you'll quit starcaft, will you consider to have "lose" 10 years of your life?
there is a bunch of unnecessary things in life, do you think the 1000 posts you have on TL will stay in your memory forever as something you HAD to do? certainly not, but who cares, you had fun for a while and you'll have fun with another game later and maybe you'll have fun with a sport or with your kids if you ever get some.

If you feel like a miserable person then don't start playing wow since it will suck your life force out of you.(Or do it since it gives your life a meaning, whatever) If you feel like you got plenty of stuff to do all the time then you don't need to start playing, but if you do you will feel that it takes a bit too much of your free time and thus you will either quit or give up a bit of other activities. If you feel like an average person with some time to spare every day then yes, it is a quite good time waster as long as you don't replace other activities with wow playtime.
