I just bought a laptop through a company deal. I think it's a pretty sick deal (999$)

IDS HP compaq 8510p PENRYN - Performance

The specs:

Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.5-GHz, 800-MHz, 6-MB L2 cache)
Operating System: Genuine Windows Vista® Business Edition 32/64
Memory: 4096MB 667MHZ DDR2 2, 2GB DIMMs
Hard Drive: 160GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
Display: 15.4-inch diagonal WSXGA+ WVA, anti-glare (1680 x 1050 resolution and 16M colors)
Optical Drive: DVD+/-RW SuperMulti DL Drive
Graphics: ATI Mobility RadeonTM HD 2600 with 256MB of GDDR III video memory and 512 MB HyperMemory
Wireless: Integrated Intel 802.11 a/b/g/draft-n Wi-Fi Adapter with HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth® Wireless Technology
modem: NIC Intel Gigabit Network Connection (10/100/1000) Modem MDC V92
Battery: 90 watt AC adapter Battery 8-cell (73 WHr) Lithium-Ion battery

Dualpoint Touchpad and Pointstick Security Fingerprint Reader
Software: Media OS DVD Vista Business 32 presinstalled, 64 bit vista business comes as well if I want to upgrade
Warranty: 3 years

The question is: should I boot it when it comes, or should I take it apart? I prefer the latter :D

Pretty sure that computer science teaches you the foundations of how a computer works, as in what parts it would require etc. So it's safe to assume anyone who studies computer science knows what's what and how it works. (And besides do you know anyone who studies computer science and isn't all into hardware stuff. :p)

My question is, how the hell did he major in computer science without a laptop, aren't those things required for those studies?

Seriously why don't all of you know that I'm a CS major? I MEAN CMONNN!!!!!

computer science != hardware

That really depends on the person/university program... I've taken digital logic and computur architecture, both required classes, which basically is plenty of background to understand how a computer operates on a hardware level. Though I do know plenty of people at other schools that don't have a clue about hardware.

That definition applies to so much stuff you wouldn't have the slightest idea on how to open, that is ridiculous.

Why do you want to take it apart though? To upgrade it or just want to see what a laptop looks like on the inside? If you just want to see what it looks like, just google up dismantled laptops and look at the pictures. There are videos on youtube showing how to dismantle laptops also. Laptops are so much of a pain to take apart because there are like a gajillion screws in it, so it takes so much time, and by the time you put it back together you are left over with still like 15 screws. I speak from experience.

Desktops and laptops are totally different beasts. His laptop probably uses proprietary parts and moldings, put in place cheaply (likely glued) which cut down on the price. If you're really intent on doing it, find a guide for your laptop. Chances are someone else has taken theirs apart, and usually the first to do it (the one that makes the guide) can't put theirs back together. It's like a ritualistic sacrifice for the mobile community.

My guess knowing Compaq is that you're going to get stuck fairly quickly and will have to crack the case to access anything substantial beyond HD/ram. I don't think it's worth it.

Well if it's strictly computer science more or less you'll know how a comp works mostly for the reasons of hooking programs to the system doesn't mean you know how the paste keeping it cool works etc leave dismantling computers to enthusiasts and computer engineers. Of course most enthusiasts only mess with desktops cuz they are cheaper for more power. You know you void the warranty on a cpu if you use an after market cooler?

I've taken apart alot of laptops mainly for recovering parts to use in other laptops for friends etc. Just so you don't take it apart and fuck up a seal i suggest you find a manual on how to take it apart should come with the computer or be on the hp website. Otherwise i wouldn't mess with a nicer laptop like that one
I have ass for brains so,
even when I shit I'm droping knowledge.

Although I've never opened up a Laptop, I don't think their thick enough to house cables.

*edit: Well maybe, just some really thin ones.
