some silly comment about irreducible scheme

jazzrice United States17 Posts June 26 2008 02:34 GMT #1 X an arbitrary irreducible scheme, and forget its structural sheaf for the moment (i.e. just consider it as a topological space with its Zariski topology). Then X is simply-connected topologically (not etale-fundamental group, just the elementary fundamental group one learns in a basic course in algebraic topology). In fact, X is n-connected. I feel like this little comment should be included when one first learns arithmetic fundamental groups. I didn't know about this until just recently.
