What is to stop people from literally taking an exam with their book right in front of them? Today at work I heard guys from security talking about how it's pretty much a free ride to a degree. I mean WTF unless are the "professors", and I use that term loosely, doing to make sure the students actually learn, unless they use Webcams when it comes to tests, and finals. You think employers would catch on to this shit when they offer online degree reimbursement. But I guess anyone can do administrative work etc.

well I dont think many places take online degrees seriously

and I would assume for finals, they arrange with a local testing authority to do your test under supervision

Do you have a sample exam? Because the questions may be made with that in mind, making it a type of open-book exam, which is by no means easy.

A similar situation are Distant Education classes, which require you to write the final in a controlled setting IIRC.

Ever taken an online course?

Some are really easy and almost exactly what you say.

Some are not.

It really depends on the professor... some will make it difficult by incorporating questions from podcasted lectures that you actually have to read and take notes on (that differ from the book itself), while some will just base everything straight from the book. Most exams will at least have required you to have read the book and at least be familiar with the topics covered... so when it comes to taking the timed exam you'll know where to flip in the chapter to find the answer =/

its not like we're gonna see people get PhDs through the internet. these degrees are probably associate degrees (equiv of two years of coolege), which might be enough for some who are entering a specific trade

I would presume anything that doesn't have to take the final exam in person is probably a scam, or at least more for personal development, than for beefing up your resume... If you take an online course in a 2nd language, you can put on your resume that you're fluent in a second language and have had training. But if you cheated, you're still lying on your resume, so who really cares if people cheat in online courses? The degrees are meaningless, it's what you learn that matters.

In fact... even in university courses you take in person your grades don't really matter. A degree of someone who got all C's looks the same as someone who got all A's at the end of the day.

IMO, one day the world is going to realise how meaningless a degree (from modern universities) is, and it won't matter as much as it does today. That will probably be in 50 or so years.

I don't think it's really going to be an epidemic. No one with a brain wants to apply for jobs they're unqualified for, so it's not like you're doing to see a bunch of surgeons who cheated on their finals to get where they are.

i think universities would be 10x more useful if you didn't have to spend so much time on useless GE's and could solely focus on your concentration

hey, having a book doesn't really help you in a lot of situations. Open book tests are the hardest. For example, essay questions, proofs, unique problems, all can be super hard. If its a timed exam then maybe they could make it not so bad, but if you have a couple days to do the test then thats utterly hard.

Now that takes some mental awareness right there! focusing on concentration!!

Online courses are not seen in a good light by employers as compared to real degrees from ACTUAL colleges. Plus nowadays if you want to make a lot of money its better to have a master's degree from a decent college or become a very good business man. Online degrees are not very useful imo.
