and I would assume for finals, they arrange with a local testing authority to do your test under supervision

A similar situation are Distant Education classes, which require you to write the final in a controlled setting IIRC.

Some are really easy and almost exactly what you say. Some are not. It really depends on the professor... some will make it difficult by incorporating questions from podcasted lectures that you actually have to read and take notes on (that differ from the book itself), while some will just base everything straight from the book. Most exams will at least have required you to have read the book and at least be familiar with the topics covered... so when it comes to taking the timed exam you'll know where to flip in the chapter to find the answer =/

In fact... even in university courses you take in person your grades don't really matter. A degree of someone who got all C's looks the same as someone who got all A's at the end of the day. IMO, one day the world is going to realise how meaningless a degree (from modern universities) is, and it won't matter as much as it does today. That will probably be in 50 or so years. I don't think it's really going to be an epidemic. No one with a brain wants to apply for jobs they're unqualified for, so it's not like you're doing to see a bunch of surgeons who cheated on their finals to get where they are.

Online courses are not seen in a good light by employers as compared to real degrees from ACTUAL colleges. Plus nowadays if you want to make a lot of money its better to have a master's degree from a decent college or become a very good business man. Online degrees are not very useful imo.
