I plan to stay up till 4 am studying for my history final, and sleep during the 2 hour free period that i have before the exam.

Tell me some of your stories while studying for these large tests... ;o

I always fail while trying to do this kind of stuff. Sometimes i ended up veyr very tired in the middle of the exam, when i tried to study with friends all night long we ended up playing winning eleven all night (i won!).

So i usually grab my 7 / 8 hours of sleep before an important test.

There is a study done on students who pulled all-nighters before exams, and students who didn't. It was actually proven that the students who got a proper night's sleep actually did better.

Though if you don't know what the hell you're doing, gl with your all-nighter

you should only cram the material into your brain if you're in deep shit

otherwise, sleep is much preferred.

but again, like intothewow, i tried staying up, ended up playing pes instead..

also, i won too =)

i've pulled four or five all nighters in the last two or three weeks. 2-3 cups of coffee, and a little motivation is all it takes.

honestly, if you're cramming because you're not confident, not getting sleep will hurt you more than it will help. by the time you're in class it'll hurt to stay awake.

I'm only speaking from a highschoolers perspective so..

If you only have a few hours left to study, skim through all the material in about 15 minutes and thats it. I think sleep should take priority over studying right now. Taking tests while sleepy and in my previous cases extremely hungery is very annoying and will often cause dumb mistakes.
So, go to sleep and walk up feeling refreshed, calm, and confident!!!

Yeah stuff like that is only useful if you know 0 about the course, then you can cause a massive surge of information into your brain without fully understanding all the concepts, spew it all out, then hope not to need it again. It actually provides a satisfying feeling if you pull it off, but it shouldn't be a common thing.

I got a 91% on my last macroeconomics exam after staying up all night, and the class average was a 69%. So that's pretty good, but I did get 2 hour of sleep. I find the best way (unless somehow you magically know everything days in advance) is to study hard in the night, get up with a few hours to spare, and then study more. All you'll be thinking about is the material since you fell asleep and woke up with it. Of course this assumes you already have at least a basic understanding of what you need to know.

As far as absolutely no sleep at all, I think you'll just be friend and not do to well. Study as much as possible, but sleep some too, or you'll die.

That's a pretty frequently cited study actually, though I've never seen the paper itself. Nonetheless it is operating with a pretty general, or rather, normal condition. One can't exactly say that a night's worth of sleep will make you learn a subject the lectures of which you haven't gone to ever.
