There's one person (a senior) I know at my school who watches Starcraft competitively and attempts to play competitively, but I'm trying to get some more friends to join in as well.

I was discussing with one of my friends, who enjoys casual gaming, and told him that Starcraft was great for Casual (ums) and competitive (melee) gaming, yet he still did not grasp the concept. He listed a few games he liked and he said he had an FPS game called Crysis and that it was extremely exciting. For example, one time he put 'cloak' on and hid in bushes, shot a guy and then two others spotted him, and he put on 'speed' and ran into the water to make his escape. That was his definition of exciting.

I tried to convince him that Starcraft is much more exciting, I went into about competitive gaming, progaming scene, WCG, etc. But he posed one question to me, and that was to explain to him something that is exciting in Starcraft. Since he is a newbie, explaining anything to him would be futile because he would not understand anything. His main argument was, that in RTS's, it's all about sending your units to battle and then watching them die and kill each other. He said that since you are not really 'in' the battle, it's not exciting.

Basically I told him I would show him a good highlight video to try to get him into watching VODs and into competitive Starcraft, but then I realized something. Even if he saw 10,000 perfectly placed storms, a great flank, or perfect muta micro, he would not be impressed because he would not understand how the game works at all. He has the game and has only beaten the campaign, been online only once and does not know what UMS are.

So he told me that if I impressed him with Starcraft, he would probably play, and of course, I'd love to bring in new blood. So I pose a question to you. Since highlight videos probably won't be the best (or if there is a good one, please link!), I want to find a good English (probably by Tasteless or something who's good at helping newbies understand the game and concepts and why each battle is so important) that will have action-packed moments, places where he will become excited and be overall impressed enough to join up the Starcraft scene.

Thanks in advance

Why can't you just do it? Your a commentator, he doesn't have to know what you do when the doors a closed and the blinds are drawn.

Get him to watch the events that tasteless casts, then he will understand. Tasteless makes everything exciting "i think this scorge is gonna get this shuttle, aaahhhHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

i used to be into fps like cs etc etc, but theres not a big proscene with teams, spectators and as such like there is with starcraft, just show him a pic of 50 000 people watching and he will understand

Well, thanks for the acknowledgment but I don't think I would be a satisfactory choice. Tasteless was definitely the reason I became enthusiastic about the game, but the only reason I watched more than one game from WCG 2006 was because he was a great commentator and I also had my brother pushing me to watch them. As for now, I doubt he'll watch more than one so I have to find a perfect game.

edit: and yes, I told him all about how awesome it is with huge fanbases and I think he already knew it (koreans are pretty much universally known in the gaming world)

something I've realized is that the game clicks with some people and doesn't with others.

I'd show him the Ng wcg documentary, or something similar that is in English. Ascension? some TSL casts when they come out? best would be actual korean pro-gaming pictures/clips showing huge crowds, etc. It's also possible that he doesn't care at all about how big it is and will continue playing shooter games no matter what.

Isn't the whole idea of Crysis to kill koreans or something along those lines?
Thats what I've gathered when I've been listening to my friends discussing it..

But yeah, I'd just show him GSL and then just give up if that didn't do it.

Yeah, it's not very well-known. I don't think you're ready for competitive Starcraft watching yet, though, so you'll have to earn some prestige before you undergo the training.

I think you should watch some replays first to gain a basic understanding of the game.

Just show him some tasteless commentating at WCG. Keep in mind he did those to make them intersting for even those who didn't watch or know a lot about starcraft.

There were CS people in the crowd he was also trying to cast for to make it still just as fun so those could be a good idea.

I reckon that people who really love only RTS games are control freaks.

and I reckon that people who like to be immersed in FPS's and RPG's are unhappy with their current situation in life.
"Oh no, we've drawn Judge Schneider" "Is that bad?" "Well, he's had it in for me ever since I kinda ran over his dog" "You did?" "Yeah...if you replace the word *kinda* with *repeatedly*...and the word *dog* with son"

Show him an awesome FPVOD? When I was showing SC to a few people I ran into the same roadblock as you, they didn't understand what it takes to be able to micro as effectively as the pros. They all thought that the computer was doing the moves and the player just got lucky. Then I showed them a FPVOD and once they actually saw how fast you have to move to control your whole army their expressions went from =/ to O.O

Nony's FPVOD commentaries might be good if you can find them (I forgot which thread they were in).

Boxer is what got me into watching progaming, haha. Try showing him the Pimpest Plays section of SCLegacy, that should seal the deal on its own.

I also think you should show him a pro FPVOD of a really intense match, so that he can see the player's APM and learn what playing the game play is like. If that doesn't impress him, I guess he'll have to stick with his other games. =o
