Are there any good laptop vendors that ship to Canada? I'm looking for decent performance with good battery life and the price range is $1000~$2000. Preferably around $1500 with shipping+tax. I'll have about $3500 to spend after I take out the cost for tuition, food & housing for university so I guess $3k would be the absolute max but I really don't want to go there.

The Dell I have right now has a really flimsy case and it's starting to give out after less than 2 years. I'm not looking to buy one immediately. Just sometime in the next 4 months or so (before I go back to uni).

So to be more specific, the things I'm looking for are (in no specific order):
  • Long lasting battery (to take with me to lectures)
  • min. 2gHz CPU
  • Decent dedicated graphics card (no more integrated! T_T)
  • sturdy case
  • 15.4 inches -- no more, no less ^^
  • somewhat stylish; not like the generic Dell case that I have now D:

RAM's not so important because I can just take out the 2GB from my Dell.

I tried to configure an Alienware but I couldn't get it below 2k lol

So if anyone knows good websites I can casually browse through in the next three to four months, please share

Lenovo laptops are pretty solid. I'm not sure how they good they are in the video department these days (I've really only used them for business).

What model is your current Dell? Their production quality seems to go up with each generation. I bought a Vostro last year and its hasn't had any issues.

www.tigerdirect.ca . They ship out of Markham Ontario with really good prices and deals. I get their flyer sent to my hotmail one sec.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=3760857&sku=T24-NB061 CA&srkey=T24NB061 CA&CMP=EMC-EMAIL2006&SRCCODE=CANEM1133 (oh you want better fx card...hmm).

Honestly if you want a good gfx card i would just go desktop but heres one.

Did you try looking harder into the Dell setups? If you want to avoid Vista, Dell is pretty much the only place that still offers XP in some for. Also, they occasionally randomly have lower end laptops with good graphics options (for those kind of laptops), so with coupons and you having ready RAM they can easily shave under 1k. I can't say anything about the cases though, they change colors at most

15.4inch and good graphics power is kind of selective though, so might really have to look into companies like Lenovo. However, Asus, if memory serves, were introducing more performance based laptops. As a Taiwanese I can't help but hype a Taiwanese company

i use lenovo, it works out for starcraft (you have to get used to the function key being farthest left though, instead of control). they usually have $300US off sales once or twice a year

I have an Inspiron 6400
2GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 gigs of RAM
shitty integrated GMA 900 or something

I hate how the plastic seems so flimsy especially when I'm carrying it around.

I hate 17inch laptops.. they're not really portable cause it's such a bitch to carry around.

hey, have you ever checked out gateway laptops? very good pricing, out of the laptops i have tried (vaio, macs, dells, hp) it has the best ventilation/cooling of them all. there is a model, the M-151XL serieis, that fits all your conditions for a price of 1100 dollars.

2.4 ghz intel dual core 2
15.4" widescreen
250 gb hd @ 5400 rpm
comes with 3gb of ram

and MOST IMPORTANTLY
ATI Mobility™ Radeon® HD 2400 XT with 256MB Dedicated Graphics Memory\

not bad for a 1100 dollar laptop~~ check out their website or this link

kyjori, how is the chassis? Does it bend easily? I noticed that some laptops have magnesium cases instead of plastic.

The specs & price look pretty good

i dont have this model, i opted for a 14.1 inch widescreen

it is better then dell (chasis wise) a bit more firm than those, but still nothing like the macbook pros. but then again, very few computers have the magnesium cases in the price range i tend to look through.

it doesnt bend that easily, my gateway has been dropped quite a few times and made it out fine aesthetically and performance wise, but if u are looking for a awesome laptop with metal chasis, look elsewhere.

its plastic bottom, but i dont know what the top is made out of.

I've always felt meh about 14 inch laptops because the keyboard seemed so small >_<;

Gah maybe I should wait until the end of my work term to buy a new laptop. The one I'm using right now has decent specs so upgrading to a so-so laptop seems like such a waste of money due to the small spec differences.

xotic pc seems pretty legit. Has anyone bought from them before?

I don't understand how they could price the Asus M50SV-A1 so low. My friend and I thought it was a mistake at first
