I dont kno why, but im fuckign scared of playing iccup games. I think its because i dont want to lose and get a bad rank/rec . I say ima mass game and then i play like 1 game on iccup every 2 days. I dont understand why i do this. I kno iccup rank/rec means nothing but i still cant get over that. I hate it so much any ideas on how to break this?

lol same here. There's just something about starcraft where I take losing as a personal insult. I usually play Iccup til I lose then never touch it for another month or so

I was kinda like that too. You just gotta make yourself mass game one day, and then after that it won't be scary anymore.

Just play on a smurf and don't tell anyone the name. I kindof have the same problem, playing iccup shows me how much I suck and I hate it.

Hey I sometimes feel the same way too. It sucks losing and knowing so many people like to cheese makes it worse. Would it help if you had a practice partner who doesn't insult you for your skill level or choice of strategy? I've been looking for a practice partner lately and I'm at the D/D- level. Of course, if you're at C- or higher, you should probably ignore this.

I literally start shaking after 7 minutes of starcraft in whatever setting, whether it be iccup or just some random b.net pubbie. My hand starts uncontrollably shaking, and I'll lose obviously won games because of this. I can't even control my units because my hands are jerking so hard, and when I take my hands off the mouse they still vibrate insanely. Its really scary, its like playing with extreme Parkinson's for me. I feel your pain.

probably too much pride, which everyone is guilty of

i remember way back during pgtour season 1 when i refused to ladder because i would go 1-7 while in my head i'd be convinced that i could get to C easily.

take one day, dive into it and promise yourself to play 5 games. your record might blow, but stick with it and eventually you'll come to terms with where you are. it's good that you recognize that you're scared already, a lot of people never do and will dodge forever : ]

good luck!

What's your ICC name? I'm SummerTerran. I'd be interested in playing some games and I'm around D+ level.

It's part of why I quit playing when I reach higher ranks like B-... I become too afraid of reaching my max rank, what if all the people at B are better than me?
But I also felt the same way before (in the PGT era). Resolved now, because playing CW's makes me 10x more nervous than some useless stats at iccup. But I like it since it makes me concentrate better while the adrenaline is flowing.
I'm taking whatever coverage I can get, because frankly, I'm busy working on this million dollar deal at my job. Early retirement is a good thing brotha man. - MessengerASL

Sometimes I get the same feeling, but mostly it is the losing that makes me wanna stop mass gaming because you could go on a winning streak then suddenly lose 10 straight.......

Think of ICCUP as a way of getting evenly matched games. Whenever you lose, watch the replay and focus on trying to figure out why you lost; then work on that next game.

Don't base your self-esteem on how good you are at starcraft, there are too many people that are way better anyway. Play to enjoy and improve.

Well obviously you are gonna lose. You need one hand for the mouse and the other one for the keyboard in starcraft.

I did forensics in college and I had the same performance anxiety. It can be crippling. You think starcraft is bad, imagine feeling the same way at the final round for impromptu speaking. What you have to do is convince yourself you don't care about losing, and that you're playing just for the experience. Stop giving a damn. Screw around a bit. Take it easy. Play much slower than you usually do. It'll pass, and you'll start getting better too.

I have the same problem, i usually watch a couple of my reps to see where i fucked up and then watch some good gamers and try to pick up a few things from their style of play. But as soon as i plan on playing a few games on ICCUP i always think to myself "fuck, what if i lose a bunch of games? that would mean i haven't learned a damn thing!!" and so i usually play just one game, get the loss i was so afraid of and stop for the day.

When i lose in other games i don't give a damn, but losing in Starcraft makes me feel like shit.

I have done that a couple of times and it actually works, but sometimes i accidentally snap out of it and return to my normal nervous-gaming self.

But yeah, for everyone with the same problem try it out, it really works.

I had this when I first started playing melee games at all seriously, a few months ago, in Warcraft 3. Push through the fear and nervousness, after a few games it really fades away. Sure your still nervous, but not much. I'm back to playing Starcraft, it is my one true love. Im 1-7 on ICCUP. I usually play two games a day, not because I cant mass game, or because im too nervous- I'm just too pissed. I've taught myself how to play a game with a cool head, but I have yet to teach myself to lose a game with a cool head! =)

I'm going to mass game tomorrow though. Watched some replays, and saw what I was doing wrong. Really, I'm not that bad. I just need to fix my macro and get my apm up [its at a pathetic avg of 72..]. That and the ICCUP season has just started, so im going against people with an apm of 300. Its fucking bullshit. Oh well.

Apparently some people- never met one- throw their babies into a body of water not long after their born, due to the fact that in the womb they already float. Supposedly the baby will learn to float very quickly, and if it does not it dies. I don't know if that really happens, but I suppose that idea can be applied to my Starcraft. Throw me in against much tougher players, just to stay alive for a few minutes you gotta try a lot harder. Who knows, I might be alot better than I would of been if I went against people actually near my skill level.

You just have to play games back to back

play like 10 back to back, keep playing, no matter how bad you play or even if you start to lose concentration

I suggest you do it with an account you dont mind resetting.
Even if you go like 3-7 or 2-8 or something, there is always /clearstats YES

This is always happens to me as well. Also I never rematch anyone if I win, because I think they have some advantage because they know my play style... It's pretty sad. I usually play until I win, then I don't play it for a couple days after I lose.

But yeah, I'm kind of glad I'm not the only one with the ridiculous problem.

It's not a matter of people knowing i'm bad, i don't give a damn about that, it's the fact the i know that i still suck after all this time.

That is so true, rematch is something really scary to me.

I get really shaky when i play whit a guy that has a better rank than me, i played whit this Zerg and i tryed the 3rax sunken break for the first time, when i saw that the tech actually worked i started shaking like a madman. Ive never been so scared in one game before

I remember having that problem too. Whenever I was about to play WGTour (yes, it was long time ago), everything had to be perfect before the game. Such as no hunger, no unfinished bussiness, no sleepines etcetc.... So I would usually find some kind of an issue before playing and stop playing...
Later i started to try and not care. Play in PCBang with a crappy mouse, play early in the morning with eyes still closed, play while drunk, play while high. After those i just didn't care anymore...

Just plan a day where you will play iccup all day on a smurf or just reset your stats after, and just say to yourself "Wow, I'm nervous about losing a game to some random person on the internet."

That's what I did. I still suck but you get better from playing a shitload of iccup.

Make a joke account. I've been practicing low econ zerg (2 hatch, but mostly 1 base, lol) and it helps break the idea that you need to win every game.

Also like someone said clearing stats helped. I went 16-12 my first 2 days of ICCUP and got pissed that I was losing some extremely close games and so I just /clearstats YES and then it wasn't so serious.

I have this exact same anxiety, but it applies to all the RTS i play. I actually went up against an 0-11 guy yesterday on Icup and when he won the game against me he told me "Wow, you're a real noob" and didn't even say GG. It was nice hearing from the rest of the community and I think im definitely going to do the 10 games in one day thing that's being suggested.
