I just found out a few minutes ago that my mother's boss of 1-2 months just dropped dead today. Apparently he was in the gym this morning (69 year old guy) and died. I told this to a few people on bnet and they all responded with 'haha.' I'm not personally upset or anything but that's strange/interesting.

He was 69 years old, what do you expect? :o

On a more serious note, I can understand why you got those responses. I remember when a guy I know (not close, but knew him well enough) committed suicide, but it didn't really affect me. I mean, I did feel a bit shocked when I heard the news of his death, but for some reason, I couldn't really lament for the loss of his life. Strange to note, that when I went to visit my Grandma after she suffered from a stroke the same morning as his funeral, I nearly broke down in tears.

He's referring to the C++ programming language by using Minus Minus Semicolon. Like 22--; would make the statement evaluate to 21. So he's saying that there's on less person in the human population, hence Human Population Minus Minus Simicolon.

69 isn't particularly old anymore and I assume if he was going to the gym and had a job, he wasn't completely decrepit.

I think it's pretty out of line to laugh at a stranger dying. I have no problem laughing at skaters taking ridiculous falls though.

I don't think that would evaluate to 21. Putting the minus minus first might? I don't remember that well. Anyway yeah you got it.

People just tend to act like assholes over the internet. But if you told the same people that in real life, they would respond in a normal way, like saying 'im sorry'.
That was an unknown unknown.

That's deep...!
No seriously... the way people act in real life is the important one, for the most part. Most of us are much more rude on the internet than we would ever be IRL... If you are asking for which one is 'real' I assume you mean, which one best expresses our personality overall... and I'm tempted to say it's a combination but ~90% the IRL counterpart and <10% the internet persona.

I think the asshole is the real side. Even though saying 'i'm sorry' is the normal social response, I think most people are just saying that because it's expected. They probably don't know what to say because they didn't know the dead person, so they just say what is expected and move on.
That was an unknown unknown.

I think that was meant to be rhetorical.
