Hey there,

this episode is the first follow-up episode on health in gaming, specifically focusing on mental health. We discuss multiple studies exploring health in gamers compared non-gamers.

[DISCLAIMER]: The article is written for my weekly newsletter, and published on my website.

Enjoy the read. Read you soon again.

Sitting motionless, staring into a flat 2D screen less than 3 meters from your face is inherently unhealthy. "pro gamers" and "coders" must put in a lot of work to counteract the negative health impacts of their job. The set up of your desk top area is critical.

Agreed. In addition to the physical environment that needs to get better - although pro teams seem to do a relatively good job in that regards - the psychological as well. Gaming, especially professional, seems to cause stress of various types, and generally speaking stress isn't good for humans.

As a seasoned developer, 10k steps a day was the single best thing I've done for myself. It's super important to take steps during working hours otherwise you have a mountain to climb at the end of the day.

Part of my routine is a) standing, and b) after ~20 min. of standing, I do some basic stretching for about 5 min. For, that was a major game changer.

Smart moves man. I suggest trying some 'brain balancing' while standing.
I have a sit//stand desk and I offer/recommend this set up to all my employees. I employee 2 coders, 1 business analyst, and 2 sales/marketing people.

I employ Eli Bay's relaxation response methods along with Bates Method relaxation and brain balancing techniques to keep stress low.

Eli Bay's favourite sayings: "when you breathe as if you are relaxed you start to become relaxed"

"The infinitive verb 'to relax' in Latin means "to let go' "

What you want to do is keep your cortisol levels low. This allows all your other hormones to do their thing in a balanced way.

High cortisol levels are only temporarily beneficial when you are in immediate physical danger.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I'll take a look at it later today, but makes sense as body and mind always work in tandem.

Another good thing to do is have your screen at eye level or higher.

Constantly looking downwards contributes to negative, depressing feelings.

These people staring down into their phones all the time is bad on many levels. I usually use my phone only as a phone. If not, I keep the phone held high.

Exactly what I'm doing as well; phone on eye level, same as monitors. Also, a while ago I started following "the ultradian performance rhythm", which is basically 90 min. of focused work with 20 min. breaks in between. At the same time, I'm listening to brown noise to help with focus.
Within the 20 min. breaks, I look outside the window focusing on various objects near and far to train my eyes.
