Last night I was with my daughter at a friend's house, she was playing with the other kid and us old people, we were just talking. And my friend asks me "Hey, so are you still playing bw?" "No, not at all, I'm just watching streams." Suddenly my kid pops at the scene and says "Is that the game with the zerglings?"
"Sure."
"I wanna play that, can you show me, dad?"
I consider this situation to be the pinnacle of my parenthood. My only regret is that she didn't choose the righteous way of the 1a2a3a alien race and instead picked the filthy insectoids but that's how it goes, I suppose.
And so, for tonight we're going to try to play some zerg vs computers, none of that stupid single player campaign, no way. I'm going to teach her hotkeys and keyboard usage, the most basic of micro as well, even though I suck big time at execution now I still know what needs to be done. Except for mutas but we're not going to get there. I really hope she likes the mechanics of the game and gets hooked.
All in all, I'm glad we're going to be bonding in this activity. She's reaching 13 years now, puberty and all that crap is kicking in and I don't seem to have a lot of time with her so I'm excited that I'll get the chance to spend more time with that girl.

That's such a lovely thing to read! It's a dream of mine that my sons grow up to want to play BW one day, even if I'll still love them and all that if they don't. Crossing fingers!

That is awesome... don't give up hope on 1a2a3a, she may want to explore the other races.

A little update.
We played a couple of games where she was getting familiar with the left click selection and right click pointing, messing them up quite a bit. But she quickly got the hang of keyboard hotkeys. "So I select hatchery and I do s-d and makes workers, s-o are balloons."
It was so cute at one time because I told her only to do workers, ovies and a hatchery here and there. Then a bunch of zealots walk in an kill us and she raised hell. "Why did those come, I've done nothing to them!" All in all it was a success because she wants to play tonight as well.
Watching her learn I realized how hard this game is. Things I don't think about require rather precise movement, even selection and sending to work, it's not as easy as it seems to veteran players. Compared to CSGO where she was ready to shoot (she was guarding the chickens from the bots, nothing else was done...) after a three minute explanation on how to strafe and point the crosshair, BW is hell.

This is awesome. My kids (12, 10, and 5) all play Starcraft 2, and it's a great way to spend time together. There's a ton to learn and it's super hard, but that also means you get to spend a lot of time together talking about it and practicing things.
My biggest challenge has been that the kids always want to play 1v1 against me, and it took a long time to figure out a way to make that enjoyable for both players. We finally hit on a solution that's working well for us - each kid has a worker handicap. When I play against my 5-yo, I am allowed to have 6 workers on the map, so I have to kill 6 first thing before I mine and can't build more. Against my 10-yo, I am allowed 16 workers. That has worked out to be a really fun solution, because it's genuinely hard for me to beat them with that constraint, but otherwise I can play as hard as I am able to and they don't get mad if I manage to win occasionally.

My oldest and youngest have tried BW and seen SC2 and they have no interest.. Daughter is 23 and son is almost 16 .. he plays some games. Rocket league, Terriria, minecraft are some of his favorites.

For my kids it's because it's the family sport. I play SC2 and watch pro BW and SC2 tournaments, and that's the only pro sport that's ever on a screen in our house, so my kids know it the way other kids might know soccer or baseball. All three of them have been interested in it since they were tiny, and as soon as they were old enough to understand the interface (around four years) they've all played it with me.

Also wouldn’t mind her picking the filthy insectoids coz I’m terran and the missis is protoss

I started BW when I was 13 too! That was 2009, and it was right before sc2 came out. I started with fastest maps, and ums games. I eventually went to iCCup joined clan Maximus Brood, Bakuryu taught me some builds and I have never looked back. Hope the same happens to her
