I just finished the show last weekend. While I could not say I was in awe, the show was not disappointing. Character development was good, plot was super good, acting was okay, lighting / colors / props were wow....I think it is much better than Hunger Games, although not quite Battle-Royale class yet....
My favorite scene in the movie: the Marble Scene in Episode 6.
The song towards the end of the scene is wonderful. It is called "I Remember My Name'. I made a piano cover with sheet music for it. Please check it out:
The show was exceptional, although I thought the last three episodes were weak following very akward English VIPs. It brought me to the show "Alice in Borderland" which turned out to be another fantastic show and imo had a better finish to the season. I'm very excited to see where both shows go from here.
Wow I have heard about Alice in Borderland too. Let me check it out. Yeah the VIPs were poorly developed. I feel like the last 3-4 episodes could have been better prepared.

When I found out AiB was a manga I was excited because it felt like they captured the feel of what the author intended. It also bodes well for the wealth of content available to the screenwriters. Where I thought AiB was much better suited for solving the mystery behind the games, I thought Squid did a better job of building tense moments in their games. I would prefer SG just showed us different groups competing with each other and didn't bother to pursue the main character on a path of vengeance.

I thought the first episode was super weak in AiB after just finishing SG. It made me nervous for the series. In reality, it was just that SG was sooo good and the first episode was more like a pilot episode trying to establish itself. Everything following really made it worth it.
I kinda disliked Alice in Borderlands, but enjoyed Squid Game. I read the Battle Royale mangas (+ saw the movie, and the american copycats like Hunger Games), and imo Squid Game was better than the Battle Royale movie, and almost as good as the mangas: it's the best battle royale series/movie I have seen yet. The VIPs were quite akward / horrendous indeed, but I guess that's how koreans perceive westerners?

I agree with this. I hope it gets more fleshed out in the next season, because as it stands right now, I was only really interested in the games.
Also, the marble scenes were great and I don't think I've ever been so engaged by a tug-of-war before hahaha.

I would agree that the quality of SG is better then Battle Royal (movie), but the group of kids in BR did an amazing job acting in it. Battle Royal 2 was pretty bad though lol. I enjoyed hunger games as books. The movies were okay, but I wish they just turned the Hunger Games into an arena series. The arenas in the movie were pretty stunning. There are tons of victors from the books that would make great Origin stories or even a few Hunger Games where we don't know who the victor will be and I would hope they are ruthless with who actually wins versus who the audience is rooting for.
I think you guys perceive Battle Royale to be inferior to Squid Game by judging them as stand-alone works irrespective of time and space. BR was made in 2000. 21 years before Squid Game! Think about the technology / availability of ideas at the time. BR was the first survival game movie as far as I know.
When watching Squid Game I couldn't help but think I have seen those elements elsewhere already.
my baseless theory about the vip characters is that they didnt hire separate english script writers and they made the korean writers draw up a script that made the vips as obnoxious and despicable as possible. i guess it doesnt really explain why the actors for the vips were also so bad though. like, actual d tier "i could do better than them" level.
Kinda unrelated but you are a moderator right? Can you help unban my friend? Here is his profile. He was automatically banned by a bot years ago for some unknown reasons. Thanks!

We watched alice in borderland before we saw squid game. While they were both great we preferred Alice.Squid was more predictable, we picked the plot twists halfway through.Looking forward to the next season of alice.

Hello there, he wasn't banned by a bot. He was banned by a moderator because his first post on the website was used to advertise his personal business in the blog section. According to our mod notes he was also unbanned about a year later, then immediately banned again after one post because he continued to advertise his business. It doesn't help that his account name is the name of the business he was advertising.
Sorry, but we probably won't be letting him come back on that account. He's free to make a new account, although if he's just here to advertise I don't think it will last long.
Hey guys! What a great performance by the winner in ASL's Semifinal today!
Beside enjoying the match, I had a bit of time this weekend so I challenged myself to playing 5 Squid Game songs in 50 seconds! Did I really do it? And what would happen should I fail??
If you like Squid Game, you may recognize 2-3 songs I think. I hope you will enjoy this short yet humorous clip.
