On the usefulness of Google Now

JoinTheRain Bulgaria409 Posts September 15 2020 09:34 GMT #1 When I watched the ASL 10 Group E, Tastosis were so funny when they mocked Siri and how useless it is. I thought to myself "I don't have Siri as I am an Android pleb but let me see if Google Now is any better. I will ask it the same question they asked Siri." So I did and this is what happened: I came to the conclusion that Google Now is just as useless as Siri is when it comes to Starcraft content.

Voice recognition technology is amazing. 10 years ago it was thought that the human language was so complex, so uniquely human, that computers will never be able to translate noises into words. It remained firmly in the realm of science fiction, a sign of technological singularity being reached.. Today it is assumed that all human languages will be voice recognised eventually, no matter what funny accent or dialect. As for ASL, there's only so many three letter acronyms to go around, it's only to be expected that some tournament acronym with a small area of interest in the English speaking world, hosted in Korea will not have priority over a language with probably hundred times the adherants. Personally I find it amazing that if I type "asl bw" a bunch of random looking letters into google, I get presented with exactly what I am looking for.

JoinTheRain Bulgaria409 Posts September 15 2020 12:39 GMT #3 It's all meant as a joke, as far as I get it. No one in his right mind would deny that voice recognition has its uses. It is the only means of communication for impaired people and some of those people are a real adornment for humanity such as Stephen Hawking. I would say it is acceptable to have a few laughs at the inadequacies of a technology in its early stages but never stop exploring the potential.
