While you made good points about her hiding the more seductive parts of herself it still hints at it. Part of the breast is showing and upper leg, and so on. This points at while like you said she may be trying to play hard to get she is still revealing tid bits to keep whoever interested.

There's nothing wrong with trying to derive meaning from the painting, but that is only one part of the process. As bizarre as this sounds, when you are evaluating paintings from a scholarly perspective, you want to focus in more on specific decisions the painter made, rather than general ideas about his intentions. Of course, it is appropriate to look at the historical context of the painting when trying to get into the head of the painter.

One specific thing this painting shows is how Ingres is known to make the painting look the way he wants rather than focusing in on specific details of the anatomy being perfect. An experienced art critic would probably look at this painting and point out some of the flaws of how a certain part of the body isn't supported correctly, or how there is the wrong number of vertebrae, or something like that.

i don't think you're completely right or wrong. i feel that one is supposed to look at the decisions the artist made and then incorporate them into a bigger picture. why did he do it this way? what effect does it have?

his painting does have a lot of mistakes in it regarding perspective. the woman's body and limbs are elongated and out of proportion. also, the background is unrealistically pitch black. i, however, do not know what to make of this.

My sister minored in art in college, so I asked for her advice on this topic. I felt without her guidance my comments would not be sufficient to qualify for a post that helps to prepare you for a college art class.

The way you should be critiquing the paintings obviously is going to depend on the type of art course you are taking. What exact "art-humanities" class are you going to take?

this isn't meant to prepare me for anything. it's just for fun, do whatever. i think there are a lot of art enthusiasts TL based on previous threads so i wanted to know what they think about art and how they view it and their interpretations.

i think the best way is to have a variety of perspectives and stuff.
